Seems like if that was the case, and they can move it with just one tractor, they would have. Can't imagine why Terry Wallace couldn't see all that from the top of the clubhouse?

Opening day, I was in a box on the 4th floor with a buddy of mine. His uncle is the Operations Supervisor and he came by to BS with us for awhile. I told him I needed about 25 Smarty Jones bobbleheads that they were giving away the next day. Said they were under lock and key, but that he would get me all the beer I could drink if I would go down and man the second tractor in case it was needed. Obviously, he was kidding and would never have let my drunk a$$ near their tractor, but that's the first thing I thought of when I saw the gate still on the track.

16 cents, thanks NYS gas tax
335.9 here in the Mohawk Valley, not quite sure what diesel is...but probably less there!

sdjcom 03-13-2008 08:50 PM

I've had no problem, needs to clear his hard drive out with pconpoint !!

Is the video replay of the race available?

yes..on Twin Spires...every time I watch it, that gate is still there though

pgardn 03-13-2008 08:57 PM

I have always been scared this would happen
at the minor league track I attend.

What if the tractor does not start,
leave it idling... what the heck do you
do? They have a backup, a tractor that would
pull the tractor with the gate.
Never used the backup.

NEVER had a problem.

GPK 03-13-2008 08:58 PM

That sucks boys....sorry to hear about that.

Damn...

Agreed. I will always remember JJ Gracie (sp?) on Steve's show used to say, regularly, "there's one way to win and a million ways to lose"..Always seemed to me a bit cliche, but the longer I'm around this game I get amazed at how true to life it really is..

Cal racing has it.
You just have to sign up.
No cost.

Type the horses name in and you got it.

Looks pretty funky.

You have no idea the gate is sitting
until Borel turns around to make
sure he is clear and then pulls
up.

never said I knew what I was doing:)

Hickory Hill Hoff 03-13-2008 09:45 PM

saw the replay...freakin' unbelievable!

ArlJim78 03-13-2008 10:12 PM

unreal, and what about the back-up system or safety? nobody had the forethought to go in and tap Terry Wallace on the shoulder? he sounded so stupid trying to pick up on closing horses a full 10 seconds after everybody pulled up.

The times I've seen this happen before, the track announcer pick up on it much sooner. Could have been a real disaster.

Well,I think the 2 horse wouldn't have gotten beat up so much if the announcer had seen it earlier. It would have been a little better. Those 3 horses back there banged around pretty hard.I am surprised about that part. The other part I've seen happen before.Wow,it seems like at this track, but maybe not.It wasn't Gulfstream though. This was like 3 or 4 years ago.

golfer 03-14-2008 06:33 AM

I guess this was not part of the pre-race instructions:

"Calvin, when you get to the top of the stretch, make sure you float her out to the 17 path, just in case the Bleepin tractor doesn't start@!!!"

Tough break, Chuck and Bob. But at least everyone involved came out of this mess safely.

zippyneedsawin 03-14-2008 06:42 AM

Tough break guys.. hard enough to win in this game..

Travis Stone 03-14-2008 07:11 AM

I was there today... it was quite intense. The horses hit the far turn, and the gate is still there. Everyone noticed it on the apron. It was crazy.

As for Terry Wallace, one of the last things an announcer is looking for is the starting gate during a race. It's such a rare event. Ironically, it happened I believe at Horsemen's Park... and Wallace was the caller?

Either way, it's just a tough break and an unfortunate incident. But everyone came out unscathed and no worse for the wear.

I think it happened in the very first race at the "new" Gulfstream. Certainly a harbinger of things to come as it turns out.

GBBob 03-14-2008 10:45 AM

For what it's worth, Oaklawn did the right thing and split the purse equally among all entrants. They told me they had found 6 incidents like this in the past, two tracks split the purses and four hadn't.

good for you and chuck! splitting was the right thing to do, no matter who was involved.

pgiaco 03-14-2008 11:02 AM

Had a similar thing happen to me at Finger Lakes. A horse reared in the gate and somehow they sprung the latch, it looked like a demolition derby, but my filly and 2 others basically ran around the track into the stretch. FL didn't distribute the purse and my filly was never the same. There's no question the race should have been declared a non race, but a little something from the purse would have been nice. Sounds like Oaklawn did the right thing.

good bob thats at least the right thing to do.....but you should get the winners purse..

slotdirt 03-14-2008 11:23 AM

Someone's got to put this thing on youtube.

SCUDSBROTHER 03-14-2008 12:10 PM

What was up with the 9 horse? Was she hell bent on making a late run,or what? The 2 and the 3 have to be feeling that contact this morning. Also, they say Chris Emigh rode the 3 horse? He isn't riding at the Hawthorne Impound Center?

The only horse that had a shot was the 11 on the rail. Borel just got into Richwood and she was just starting to get rolling. Was going to be hard to catch. While it was a quick first fraction, I thought he rode a perfect race

LOL..WHAT DO THOSE 2 POSTS HAVE TO DO WITH EACH OTHER?...LOL...I am talking about some sideshow 3-way collision towards the back of the field.See the 9 shake her head after the collision she caused? Like she is furious she was pulled up.The 3 looks like she got her bell rung, and is seeing stars. The 2 is ready to see her maker. She is like "what next? you gun slap me around some more? " I ain't saying anybody would beat Richwood.Sometimes I think you don't sleep,or you get slipped some bad Chicago Speed.

LOL..you could have just said "The accident that occured behind her" but yeah, the 9 was having no part of getting pulled up....

I guess it's sad that I noticed the train wreck more than any other part of the ordeal, but it is the most unique part of it.I have seen the rest of it before.I've even seen a Chucksta pulling away at 6-1.I'm sure of it.I just don't recall it.I think I saw a 30 or 40-1 of his do it at KEENELAND.Jill Byrne asked him why he didn't let her know something. You know what da Chucksta said? LOL....Was great,man....He said "You wouldn't have believed me.":D :D :p
