I admit, that sailed right past me. Then again, I'm still listening to Herman's Hermits records.

I'm guessing he would probably welcome the break.

Cajungator26 06-19-2007 02:58 PM

If you want to be a Sugar Daddy, take it to Morty's thread. We are in dire need of some legit 'check writers.'

There is always something for which to be thankful.

The reason that I was pulled over each time was because I was in a high drug area at an unusual time and I was white. I can recall at least three incidents of people being shot or shot at while stabled there. The mexicans hated to go there because they pretty consistently got mugged when they left the track at night or beat up because they were Mexican. Half the crime in the area goes unreported because many of the people who live there are illegals who keep a low profile. You can site you stats all you want but I saw it first hand.

I'm with you Chuck, my mom grew up 5 blocks from Hialeah. In the 50's and 60's, apparently it was the place to be. Now it just sucks, just like the rest of Miami. I went there with her for the last time in '98 and she literally cried she was so depressed by how terrible it was.

Wow, more anti-Miami. I spend a lot of time in Hialeah. It's changed a lot in 10 years. One of my favorite restaurants, El Viajante is there on Palm Ave.

Nah, I'm not anti-Miami. I just hate it when places that were once good are now overrun by crime. P.S. I grew up in areas that most describe as "NWA" and riddled with crime, so that's why it's a personal vendetta.

blackthroatedwind 06-19-2007 04:47 PM

I love Miami. I don't doubt what Chuck said but I have had a great time in that city and I don't mean just in South Beach.

Buffymommy 06-19-2007 04:50 PM

We were just saying that the track isn't in the greatest of neighborhoods. Not dissing on Miami in general. But where Hialeah Race Track is, is NOT in the best of neighborhoods.

That I understand. I grew up in a mixed working class Detroit neighborhood. It was nice. Now they are bulldozing entire streets in that neighborhood.

I have no problem with Miami.....as long as I'm armed! Seriously I spent 12 straight years down there for the winter and it is a great place to hang out for a few of the colder months. But in some areas there is a real crime problem that exists.

Just curious, STS, which part of Detroit did you grow up in?

Just east of Livernois between 6 Mile and the Lodge. Not far from U-D. You?

West Side! ;) I grew up in Redford-- Six Mile and Beech Daly area. Not too far away. Redford is a working class neighborhood probably similar to where you were living back in the day. I always have the impression that Redford is a lot like Detroit used to be before everything spun out of control. Now I'm in Farmington Hills.

lol. Redford was where the rich kids lived (before they moved to F Hills). Just kidding. My cousin played for Redford. Class of 79.

A little before my time-- class of 93. I hope Hialeah has a better fate than the DRC. There's a Home Depot, Meijer, Costco, a strip mall, a restaurant, and a huge parking lot there now. I drive past it everyday and regret that there used to be a grandstand there.

Couple quick comments:

*Hialeah is about as close geographically to "Miami" as Hallandale / Gulfstream (so I would not "take shots" at Miami because of Hialeah).

*Calder is not exactly in a "great" neighborhood either (you go about one block west of the track and you better "pray for your life"). I don't have the stat's but I would guess that the crime rate around Calder exceeds a similar sized area around Hialeah Park. One difference is the ease of access to the major Thoroughfares like the Turnpike and 95. I don't necessarily translate the word Hialeah to crime personally (and I work 2 miles from Hialeah).

*Hialeah may have been a safe track for the horsemen to train / race and beautiful to watch the horses while running, but the 1st word that comes to my mind when I hear the name Hialeah Park is "toilet". Most Kennel Clubs and even Pompano Park have better "environments" for their patrons than Hialeah (example they have air conditioning). I would just as soon move the Super Bowl's away from Joe Robby er Pro Player er Dolphins Stadium and back to the Orange Bowl before I would take away a Breeders Cup (or any other major racing event) from Belmont, CD, etc and put it at Hialeah Park (at least the 1990's / 2000's version of Hialeah Park).
