While I agree that her 4-year-old season was a disaster....I think the credit for that should go to the butcher who trained her.

Can anyone name a single D. Ranged Lukas trained horse, who was raced in two or more triple crown races, and did anything at age 4?

Cat Thief?

The Indomitable DrugS 12-21-2006 03:17 PM

He never won a single race at age 4....or beyond.

But yeah...he was "right there" in a few sub-par runnings of important races. He did manage a 2nd in one Grade 1 and a 3rd in another Grade 1 stake that year.

I know he didn't win but he had a very good year ( second in the Whitney to Lemon Drop Kid ) and an extensive campaign.

Im glad I mentioned him....

Wasn't Victory Speech bought privately from Jerkens after his debut?

The Indomitable DrugS 12-21-2006 03:42 PM

Do you remember the horse who Victory Speech beat in the Strub?

Clues: He was the longest shot on the board...ran over 50 times, and his two career stakes wins came in ungraded stakes at Ruidiso Downs. Another very popular internet board horse back in the day.

Yeah he was.. he was orginally owned by Robert Entenmann and trained by Jerkens...

blackthroatedwind 12-21-2006 03:44 PM

As I recall he lost his debut, at Belmont, at some ridiculously low price.

I don't remember the slightest thing about his 2yo season.

I know the same connections bought Thunder Gulch and moved him from Kimmel late in his 2-year-old season. He was one year before VS

KirisClown 12-21-2006 03:45 PM

You're right he lost to Busheta Buck.. a Leo Obrien runner.

The other horse to duplicate that time was another Baffert trainee that hasn't been seen in a while, to my knowledge...........Mr. Sekiguchi.

I don't know if the two horses worked as a pair or not, but it does look like one or both of them may be nearing an afternoon appearance in the not-too-distant future.

1:11 and change is pretty common for Baffert runners. If Baffert runners dont work fast then I am curious. I think he is preping this horse really well for his next debut. I figure he gives him a 7F allownace before stretching him out

You were in diapers. They bought Thunder Gulch from Howie Bagels. Thunder Gulch lost by a nose in his debut ( I believe at 9:2 ) to a 25-1 shot from a Jersey trainer after having a tough trip. I know the first time he ran for Lukas was when he won the Remsen....the race before Cigar won the NYRA Mile.

ORIENTATE!!

The Indomitable DrugS 12-21-2006 03:51 PM

Yep!

I remember VS tailing off form as a 4yo. Luckily, I had one of those old Graded Stakes yearbooks ('97) from the DRF by my computer...and it had his 4yo season's form in it.
