Pennine Ridge is a very odd choice for a 200k race..

If someone wanted to name a stake for a marginally talented December Hill turf horse.... Vergennes would have been better, at least he won a Grade I.

Eight Thirty for a 3yo race at Saratoga. Look him up and see what he did there in the summer of 1939. One of the best you may never have heard of though they did get him into the Walk of Fame up there. I think he may have a race named for him at Delaware of all places.

summer squall. he was a superstar at the spa at 2. Maybe bring the A Phenomenon back. memories of silver on turf, though wait a while was cool too

I would love to see a New York stakes race named for Say Florida Sandy.

Just to jog the memory:

98 Starts, 33 Wins, 17 Places, 12 Shows Career Earnings: $2,085,408

Raced as an entire male from age 2 through age 9. First NY-bred to go over $2M in earnings, and he did it all in sprints and without ever winning a GI, to my recollection. Remains 2nd in NY-bred career earnings behind only Funny Cide.

I think a NYRA stakes honoring this guy would be more than appropriate. Hope it happens.

Seattle Slew for crying out loud.

Also Crème de la Fete

Honestly I suck at this and have so much history to catch up on BUT if we're just talking about, well not necessarily a G1 race but a small stakes race?

One of my favorite NY horses was Meese Rocks and, while there is probably a long list of deserving horses, will toss her name into the mix. :)

Win is really a no brainer selection.

She was a nice one...
I thought the idea, by Hooves, was a NYRA stake for {presumabably} NY Breds. I'm sure I read into that, but it sorta made sense, to me at least.... Which is why I suggested Saginaw...But then the thread sort of spun outta control into "pick a great horsey name that doesn't have a stake named after him/her at NYRA even though there are races at other tracks celebrating the same horsey name" contest.

Which is where I tuned out. :o

There definitely should be a race for Ferdinand. A great horse who won the Kentucky Derby and Breeders Cup Classic. The sad part was his death.
I dont think there was a race ever named in his honor.

How about the Arrrrr Stakes (for horses that haven't won a stakes yet) and then combine with the Pirates Bounty at Santa Anita for a cross country daily double! :o
