SPICER CUB assumed the early lead, set the pace slightly off the rail, bolted midway on the far turn, was in third position entering the stretch, was straightened at the head of the stretch to be in the six path, regained a clear lead in upper stretch, bolted inside the three sixteenths pole causing his rider to lose his irons, raced between the parked starting gate and the outside rail in mid-stretch, closed determinedly under game urging and just missed

I thought the most funny aspect was the winning trainers name: Small, Richard W

In his 40 year career, in addition to Broad Brush, outstanding horseman and Vietnam veteran Marine Dickie Small trained '94 Classic winner Concern. He's one of the most respected men in racing from one of the most respected families in equestrian life. His uncle was Hall of Fame trainer Sidney Watters. Small will saddle the nice Broad Rule in the PIM 4th shortly..

Pretty amazing that you would even need to explain who he is. Less amazing that the guy made fun of his name.

Speaking of Broad Brush. His Pa Derby was nowhere near as extreme, but he won in similar fashion - bolting and coming on again.

Thought it was hilarious, just the way Xavier Perez said "it was nuts" in the interview...I literally laughed out loud. Glad to see that both him and the horse came out of it in good shape.

Spicer Cub has blinkers on in the first race at Pimlico today, 1:10pm. Keep an eye on the starting gate. (Not when they come out of it, of course. Later on.) At least I'm assuming he's racing in the blinkers. I guess Perez could've meant he just trained in them.

Aw nuts. Finished 2nd again. As you can imagine he was keen blinkers on but the opening half was 49ish (that's a technical term used by clockers). Still, might've just been a tad too focused. He went straight as an arrow though so that's a positive. In a situation like this, do you cut back on the cups the next time or hope he's over the crazy running and take them off?

Loved the comment as he went into the gate. "The star of Youtube, Spicer Cub!"

ETA: Here's an article on the race. They took extra precautions when moving the starting gate. http://blogs.courier-journal.com/rac...on-spicer-cub/
