Just think it's ironic that the second place horse in the last two Classics at CD - both of whom failed as favorites - end up getting to know eachother romantically.

The Indomitable DrugS 01-26-2011 02:12 PM

Holy crap - there are 12 horses sired by Indian Charlie in that catalog.

So much for the days of him getting a token horse or two with inevitably one of the weakest female families in the whole catalog ... and IC the poster inevitably busting a nut over said horse.

richard 01-26-2011 02:23 PM

Of course that was always the knock on Bid ; his very weak family . Probably rightfully so . Much weaker than IC's who does show female vibrance in 1941 with Dog Blessed . Bid was a freak of nature , somehow overcoming his family shortcomings on the track and somehow passing on some good genes through his fillies .

Of course the physical matches are as important as the paper matches . Bernardini is 16.1 1/2 h so we expect a large horse . We know Zenyatta is 17h +.

A lot of faith given to a stallion with 1 crop on the ground to race. Consider Bernardini is likely to be around a long time he is only 6. Maybe they were afraid Indy couldnt get her in foal?

The Bernmafia and the Zenyattards united?

I don't remember Bernardini having many rabid fans ... other than The Fat Man.

He got called the "best horse ever." People who didn't bow at the altar before the BCC were automatically labeled "haters," no matter how much thought they put into explaining why they weren't totally convinced. Much focus was put on his beautiful action and fluid movement as a reason to be forced to agree that he was "great," rather than his races themselves.

Sounds awfully familiar, and the most recent time that a racehorse seems to have spawned legions of obnoxious fawning fans whose ability to have a rational conversation somehow always ended the moment his name showed up in a post.

Thank god Smoothie wasn't around then.

Well, they can't breed her to Nicanor. He's not retired yet, and Dynaformer doesn't take maiden mares so that's out. Darn. No fan-plosion in 2012.

AP Indy's no spring chicken. Maybe they don't want him trying to mount a 17+ hand maiden.

Nicanor has done enough

Do you think that Three Chimneys or whomever runs Dynaformer's career would decline breeding to Zenyatta? Maybe, but call me skeptical.

MR probably doesn't want the hassle. I'm sure they knew who they were breeding to some time ago.

Zenyatta's people may have said some ridiculous things and played to the insanity a bit much but they haven't been successful in the business by being stupid. AP Indy and Dynaformer are simply not good matches with her. It was a bit out of the box to go to such a young stallion but IMO a pretty good choice. Especially if they intend on selling a colt as Freddy suggested.

I would think the bidding on a good looking Bernardini Zenyatta colt starts at 3mil and if the Sheik elects to own it is a world record. Especially if the next few crops of Bernardini's are as or more successful then this group. I cant image not selling a colt nor can I imagine Team Moss ever selling a filly. How do you not take a shot at 10 plus mil on a colt that is 18 months old?

Bernardini is sired by AP Indy. I guess that is not the same but close enough.
Who is a good match?

Betsy 01-26-2011 05:38 PM

I actually like this because Bernardini has been passing along speed to his offspring (Stay Thirsty, Buffum, To Honor and Serve, Heron Lake, etc.........).

I think he could be a better choice than Indy. I wonder if the Mosses liked the Bernardini half to Zenyatta.......and if that's a reason to breed him to her. Nice coup for Bernardini!

She isnt the easiest mare to breed. More importantly the polictics of the stallion become important at auction with such a high profile foal. If you breed her to a Darley stallion Team Dubai is likely to support the potential sale. That is a nice insurance policy. Plus Bernardini aint chopped liver at least so far.
