I totally agree about Speightstown though, I might have jumped the gun.

ever??? this might come as a surprise but there was horse racing prior to 2003. midnight lute was very good, but best sprinter ever? not even close.

His triple of the Forgo, and 2 Breeders Cup sprint wins are as good as it gets.
On fast, sloppy and synthetics...
If I am wrong, its not by much... and I said "might be the best ever" not that he is

yep. i was using him as an example because he was another horse who had a few monster races. no one is going to call him maybe the best sprinter ever.

I'm a little surprised that you wouldn't feel comfortable tossing Lost in the Fog. For me, he might be the easiest toss of the 27 entries.

Any race ML would be in vs a group of "the best ever" would set up for his style, I have no doubt in my mind he would be competitive with all of these.

he probably would be competitive vs the horses listed. still doesn't make him maybe the best sprinter ever, or even close. he ran one huge race in the forego. his breeders cup wins were okay, but nothing great and its not like he beat any great horses. take a look at the horses cannon shell mentioned and what they accomplished. look at a horse like housebuster. i could name a dozen more.

he was a nice horse who was compromised because he was so big. he had gate issues due to his size. but lets be a little realistic about him.

In fact, in a couple of cases I put in horses that I don't personally believe to be among the top-9, simply because I thought their inclusion might make for a more entertaining discusion.
So.....how would you guys play these races? If you had to play a Pick-3 here, what would the ticket look like? etc.

Belmont Park - Fast track - (assume all horses are in good form, have their regular jock, etc.)

He had breathing issues.

Baffert maintained all along that he was cut out to be a router and that without the breathing issue, he'd have been an unstoppable force going long.

Indian Charlie 06-19-2010 01:06 AM

I'd probably have used Ack Ack in any of those 3 spots. At least the 8 and 6f ones anyways.

he was also huge and had trouble in the gate because he was so big. but you are right, he had serious breathing issues. you clearly have followed the sport for many years and have seen some good ones. was midnight lute one of, if not the best sprinters ever?

Good point. A bit before my time, but didn't Groovy run some out-of-this world speed figs?
