I breezed through the NBC telecast and I thought I heard Pletcher say something to the extent of Calvin is a great jockey at other tracks as well, but he is 5 lengths better then everone else at Churchill.

I swear I've heard him say that before. Had a weird moment of deja vu. Maybe it wasn't even Todd that originated that idea of Calvin being 5 lengths better at Churchill. I don't suppose he could become BFFs with Pimlico and Belmont this time could he?

calvin, to quote forrest gump, isn't an educated man. but he's not a stupid man. he told another jock yesterday that he had learned from this horse in the second at oaklawn, namely that the horse could run off the pace. the other jock had expected him to be on/very near the lead yesterday, but calvin assured him that wasn't going to happen. calvin is a good rider, his ability to get rachel to relax when she enjoyed running off with exercise riders was noted more than once. he knows he made a premature move last year in new york. he won't do that again.

ought to be interesting. i'm not saying this horse will absolutely win the t.c., but he certainly has a shot, and he has the right rider. if he loses, it won't be calvins fault.

If he gets to the Belmont with a shot, maybe he should consider riding a couple of races just for s.hits and giggles.

So,, why is it that Calvin is so successful riding the rail? Do other jocks just not try it? I can only imagine that it is scary to ride that close to the rail. I ride endurance horses and there is about a mile stretch of pines that we canter thru on our regular training trails. Its really twisty and you have to keep your legs tight or you will take out a knee. If not your whole damn leg. The horses love this stretch and always want to open up, adding to the excitement. I can't even tell you how much fun this is,,, but also somewhat nerve wracking. Wonder if hugging the rail is similar?

The thing I love about Calvin is that, like most of the other Cajun jocks, most seem to be horsemen. They've been race-riding since they were kids, they know how to figure out the horses mentally, pay attention to it, use it to their advantage.

Calvin is certainly in a league of his own at CD, I finally hit the Derby this year and he was the only reason I went with SS. Coming out of the #4 hole isn't the easiest trip but he handled the horse to perfection. Don't see this horse as good enough to end the TC drought but with Calvin he has a slight chance!

Riding the rail is tough because you have no way out. If you go to loop the field from the oustide you can always go wider if neccessary. When your on the rail if a horse drops down to the rail your stuck. Horses arent like cars... if you break stride in the stretch 99% of the time you don't win.

You can't be this big a moron. I was obviously complimenting Borel for being a skilled horseman.

And for the adults here, Borel clearly used earlier races to assess the rail. Anybody who watches him knows he's not a rail-only rider. He's just braver than most when he commits to that path.

Says the woman who compared Calvin Borel to most jockeys in an area in Louisiana after winning his 3rd Kentucky Derby...cuz yanno, most jockeys from that part of Louisiana can win 3 derbies because of some magical stuff in that area that makes them communicate with horses differently than other parts of the world.

Calvin is more in the zone than I have ever seen him. Look at his interviews. He's stepped up to serious business. He made us enjoy a wonderful experience of ownership in this game and that's what makes him special. It doesn't make a difference if you've got a low level claimer or a Triple Crown nominee, he's there early in the morning for the work. I am so glad he could hand Todd his first Derby. I just hope they can continue a relationship. It wouldn't be a bad deal
