no i know her reason was flimsy , she hit the shot and was fine until after the shot and she grounded the club then , i have seen people ground the club before they play the shot , i think this is where some of the confusion is coming from

The ball only moved a few inches out of the water in into the rough, but still inside the hazard line. Had the ball cleared the hazard line, she could have grounded her club without penalty.

what if that was old molly in the lady's member guest who was 75 at the time , assuming there was a tape that you as the club pro could look at , and saw that while the ball remained inside the hazrd , the old lady (unlike a young spray wie) would have lost her balance and fell into the water without the aid of the club touching the ground .... in that case couldn't the exception to grounding the club be used and the women not penalized?

1. Old Molly wouldn't have gone in the hazard and played that shot.

2. Rules are rules. They apply to everyone.

I had a woman that was a member at a course I worked at for years not speak to me for a very long time because I DQ'd her and her 2 playing partners from a tournament :D

kev , then why is the exception there in the rule book , most infractions there are no cameras there , if someone was in a bunker and the ball was plugged up near the lip , they took a hard swing , and their 1st reaction was not oh where is the ball , their 1st reaction was a reflexive action of putting the club into the sand because they didn't want to go tumbling down , i have seen this time and time again with older people - when would the exception apply is my question?

I'm fairly certain the bunker exception has to do with the golfer not testing the surface of the sand when a situation like that occurs.

Exactly Martin, Woody got the ball out of the hazard, so of course no penalty. Michelle failed to get her ball out of the hazard, so she deserved the 2 shots. Its pretty black and white.

Funny ending to the story. As I said, the lady didn't care for me for a long time. I used to play a lot of golf with her husband. Years after I left that job, I ran into them at an OTB in Chesapeake. Come to find out, they had a huge love of horses too. We all became pretty good friends in the end.

I'll tell you a good Dq story. I was playing in a couple's championship and after the round the pro asked me if I saw what the people in my foursome did in the trap on #5. I was standing next to the green side bunker and the other team in my foursome evidently touched the sand with the rake in the bunker. The team 190 yards away claimed that they were testing the consistency of the sand and wanted the couple DQ'ed. The women was such an awful golfer that she couldn't have cheated if she wanted to. I told the pro I did not see the infraction and I did not believe it occurred. After the round the couple that complained accused me of covering for them. My wife and I played with the complaining couple in the 2nd round of the tournament and they watched every move I made. I was so irritated I shot my career low round and my wife and I won the tournament. They still don't talk to me.

Career low? Must have shot 86 :D

Do you find that women are far bigger sticklers when it comes to calling rule violations on each other? My wife says it always goes on while I have never had an issue. I think part of it is the men know the rules a little better, to make a generalization. Do you agree?
