There's something to be said for predicting a horse would even make it to the starting gate on Derby day off of one race nearly 11 months beforehand.

I don't put too much stock in Mendip's performance. The 1-2 leaving the frontstretch were 1-2 at the finish, and ran the 9.5 furlongs in 1:59 and change...how he performs over a truer race would be in question.
