Chavez didn't deserve the award in 1999? He won the riding titles at Gulfstream, Belmont Spring, Belmont Fall, and rode the most winners in NY for the year despite not riding there regularly until April. He also won two Breeders' Cup races that year.

He did well in NY earlier in his career and then had some problems. . . he has kids and family now in WVA, so I doubt he's going anywhere and I'm not sure he's too ambitious at this point.


where did he originally come from? i wanna say some place in the mid-west. Thought the story on him was he hooked up with an older rider who ventured away from CT ( i wanna say glen reeder, but i know thats wrong), when he came back he brought travis with him, the name slips me though, Dupius, Duppy, Kirkandawl, Cornwall, etc.. He was winning on anything out there at CTwhen he first started, and i didn't take long for the public to make him chalk in pretty much every race after first couple of months.

Sure he deserved it. I'm saying him making it to that level can give hope to a guy like Dunkelberger.
