1) Are we sure you had a true fasting sample 8-10 hours with nada for intake other than H2O

2) Any "really" abnormal value should be repeated for confirmation a different day

3) A true Comprehensive Lipid Profile (LDL,HDL, chylomicrons etc. should be measured in follow up lab)

4) There are 5 basic hyperlipidemia's that are catagorized according to what type of lipid is elevated. Find out which one your doc is talking about.

5) If you have a "familial" or inherited form of these diseases see a specialist (Usually endocrinologist or n some cases GI) to confirm these rare disorders.

For all other management see IC's and others fine post on the subject and lifestyle....it may not be as bad as you think.
Meds may not be necessary and in general .......the less medicine you take the better off you are. Some times you have to give in but medicines are overused in this country IMO.

Hope that helped....DD

Doc, you are remarkably open minded for someone in your profession!

Oh, and to anyone interested, test after test after test has shown that red yeast rice supplements lower cholesterol far more effectively, and safely, than statin drugs.

Unless you are half Italian that is. In that case, eat those $5 footlongs and Arby's $1 sandwich deals to your hearts content!
