why?

and if he wins, you really think they'd skip maryland? barring injury of course.

I think 99% of the time trainers are talking to the owners during post race interviews. Deflecting blame and keeping dreams alive.

Who is Dunkirk again?

Triple crown glory is an overwhelming temptation, but he will have to put in an even bigger move to win the Derby. I can't see him being ready to fire off another big shot 2 weeks later. 5 weeks off then back for the Belmont. I do think he has a good shot in the Derby.

I agree. If he wins The Kentucky Derby he should most definitely skip The Preakness.

but should he run back again on Belmont Stakes day?

And if so - would you stretch him out and run in the Belmont Stakes or cut him back and run in the Woody Stephens?

what horse that wins the derby will skip the preakness? only a hurt one. its triple crown glory and fever after a horse wins the derby. none of these people are going to pass that up unless the horse is hurt.

Hickory Hill Hoff 04-12-2009 09:17 AM

He's no Curlin......:D

CSC 04-12-2009 09:29 AM

If you don't like him, he will atleast add money to the pool. He's going to take some money that's for sure.

I imagine that's true.

Is he smallish?

I keep hearing things about his appearance that don't sound consistant with the fact that he was the nations highest priced yearling sold at public auction last year.

heh heh!

As for Dunkirk's odds on Derby Day, barring a training setback I think he'll go off around 7-1. He was being offered between 7-1 and 8-1 at offshores before yesterday's races. Nothing happened to affect that much yesterday. If IWR or QR doesn't start, Dunkirk will obviously go off at lower odds.

i don't think he's small...he does seem somewhat slightly built tho. i wonder tho how many yearlings don't fulfill their early promise?

Why does everyone care why he makes the Derby? Seriously? Everyone thinks pretty highly of Quality Road....and they should. So why not Dunkirk? I'm not chomping at the bit to bet a horse making his 4th start in the Derby, and a smallish horse at that. But he's a lot better than you think IMO. Who should we be talking about?

it just seems that he is garnering more than his share of threads. the derby will run, with or without him. every year there's a hot horse that everyone chats up-invariably one who doesn't make the field. i guess i just don't get excited about the runner up in races as much as some. far too often a horse who didn't have enough to win gets credit for what he almost did, while the winner gets less credit for actually winning. i even saw mention of how summer bird impressed since he was coming late yesterday...

Yeah - QR is a big mofo

Payson Dave 04-12-2009 10:01 AM

iirc, Wasn't Real Quiet slightly built also?

Travis Stone 04-12-2009 10:01 AM

If Dunkirk was trained by someone like... Larry Jones, threads like this wouldn't exist.
