...By Friday afternoon, however, Jerkens noticed that Quality Road "wouldn't put all his weight on" his right hind foot...

...On Monday, Quality Road galloped at Belmont, Jerkens said, but came back to the barn with blood dripping from the area.

Chuck probably can fill in more but four weeks out seems like enough time to me.

the owner doesn't need the $ , doubt he goes on the 1st saturday

he will be rested up and probably sent to the Dwyer

sorry, is there a link to this or just personal opinion?

the injury is a fact

the rest is a personal opinion - i don't think with this type of owner and trainer there is a need to run this horse hurt to try and win a ky derby

they will do what's best for the horse long term , instead of what's best for them short term , if that makes sense

i will say he doesn't run

Buckpasser seemed to have the Triple Crown at his mercy, after having won the Everglades and Flamingo (Hialeah equivalents of current Fountain of Youth and Fla Derby). But up came the quartercrack and he missed the entire series while it healed. When he came back in June, he then ran the table the rest of the year (Brooklyn H, Travers, Woodward, JCCGold Cup, etc.), champion 3yo, HotY.

Moral of the story: Let your horse heal. He will reward you in the long run. No race, not even the Kentucky Derby, is worth the increased risk of ruining him.

mostly all the owners who care about the animal agree with the above

I guess it will depend on QR's individual case

Who would be so bold as to believe that James Jerkens would run Quality Road if he wasn't 100%? I don't think he would at all.

Yeah but your all forgeting who Owns this Horse. Evans will do what's best for the horse at all cost. He's one of the few Great Breeders/Owners left in the game today. If he's not 100% he won't chance it.

Quality Road gallops
By David Grening

http://www.drf.com/news/article/102821.html

Quality Road, a leading contender for the Kentucky Derby, passed a significant test in his bid to make that race, galloping 1 3/8 miles at Belmont Park on Wednesday morning after having a new patch applied to the quarter crack on his right hind foot.

"He galloped good, looked like he's walking all right on it. Hopefully he comes out of the stall good this afternoon," trainer Jimmy Jerkens said Wednesday morning. If all goes well, Quality Road could breeze at Belmont on Friday or Saturday, Jerkens said.

"If we get that into him it'll be a little bit of breathing room, I think," Jerkens said Wednesday morning. "You usually like to do something 10 days after he runs, even if it isn't a breeze, some kind of strong gallop. I think this is only the third gallop he's had since he ran."

Quality Road last ran on March 28 at Gulfstream, where he won the Florida Derby by 1 3/4 lengths over Dunkirk. Jerkens said he noticed in the winner's circle that Quality Road had suffered a quarter crack. A patch was put on the quarter crack, but it didn't hold well, and on Monday there was blood trickling from the area after Quality Road galloped at Belmont on Monday. Ian McKinlay, the equine hoof specialist, said there was still some heat in the colt's foot Monday.

But on Wednesday, McKinlay said Quality Road's foot was "ice-cold" and McKinlay put a new patch on the foot. Also, Quality Road was equipped with a regular shoe, replacing the bar shoe he had been wearing while there was no patch on the foot.

"We patched him, put a drain in so in case you have a little bit of blood," McKinlay said. The drain, said McKinlay "starts at the hairline, comes down below the crack. It's just a precaution. I'm just happy it was cold."

Somebody got a list of Derby Winners who won despite a patched rear Quarter Crack?

I can only remember one.....but my memory doesn't go back more than a year.

NTamm1215 04-08-2009 01:03 PM

I get the feeling that this whole saga was much ado about nothing. The public would probably be aghast at learning the real numbers on how many horses have quarter cracks and or more significant issues and run every day.

We are more than three weeks out... if this was the week before it's a different story, but luckily they had time to address the situation and all seems better now.
