His teams at Vandy were average at best and the broncos under his leadership were average any way you want to cut it.

All that being said, what would you give up for him? More than a first round pick? I would give up a first round and perhaps another pick or player but not much else and thats only because he is under contract (and cheap!) for the next three years.

Whoa, a Dala sighting!

Couldnt resist. Great topic. And I dont blame Cutler one bit for wanting this move. Dumb move for a rookie coach shopping your QB.

I would agree with you, but I feel this case is a bit different. The QB that the coach wanted was available. So if you could bring that guy in, who already knows the scheme you want to run on offense. I would think that it makes it that much easier for the rest of the offense to learn. It's one less thing for a rookie or any new head coach to worry about.

This is still the NFL, right?

He surely has to have thicker skin than he showed in this case. Imagine him an Eagle for a day, where you can't even wipe your a$$ from back to front without the crazies clamoring in full force calling you everything under the sun. He'd wither away into his walk-in closet and cry.

Was McDaniels so wrong to have fielded/made a few phone calls inquiring about the services of a guy who he's biased towards? He clearly had a thing for Cassell and knew of the situation(franchise tag). I think that he wouldnt've been doing his job to the best of his capabilities if he didnt at least call about his availability. Besides, as a young first year coach, you have to set the bar and make sure they all know that no one person is above the team. Too bad if Cutler refused to see that.

dalakhani 04-01-2009 09:49 PM

You guys both make good points. However, a couple of big mistakes were made:

1. McDaniel lied about it after he got his hand caught in the cookie jar. If he would have just come clean, it could have been resolved. Instead, he was at very least not forthright and he came across as being less than genuine. Regardless of his motives, he wasnt being "stand up".

2. Regardless of whether or not Cassel knows the system, he is not in the same league as Cutler in terms of talent. Cutler has a bigger arm and is more accurate. You can teach a system...you can't teach talent.

3. This was going to blow up either way. The last thing a rookie coach needs is controversy especially a 32 year old inexperienced rookie coach that replaced the most successful coach in Bronco history.

McDaniels sucks. Romeo Crennel 2: Electric Boogaloo

Washington only has 4 draft picks this year. It would be very interesting if they can actually pull off a deal. Give up some defensive players?

SniperSB23 04-02-2009 09:50 AM

I think the best part of this all is that it started with the firing of Mike Shanahan who won the freakin team back to back Super Bowls which should have spared him the humiliation of ever being fired. Karma is a b!tch and they are getting exactly what they deserved.

How can they possibly have ANY salary cap room left?

if danny boy wants the deal to go through it will in all likelihood go through. Obviously there has been tons of speculation around here in washington. The latest i heard on the radio driving in this morning was that danny is trying to bring in shannahan axing zorn thus giving us some sort of upper hand in the cutler sweepstakes. Not sure where they are cap wise, but they did cut loose some big salaries this off season in Springs and Jason Taylor as well as Marcus Washington.

IMO, i could see some sort of package deal like Campbell our first and the likes of Malcom Kelly going over... or maybe even fred davis in place of kelly.

personally, i don't care for cutler, i think he's cocky and not a great team guy, more of an individual who stood out like a shinning light at a bad football program, is he a winner? yet to be seen. But i think the campbell experience has run its course and we all know danny boy has little patience for those who don't have a major impact for his team

side note: its said that snyder himself was at the mark sanchez workout, if the the skins draft him i will refrain from rooting for them this year. This team obviously doesn't draft well and this would be the last straw that broke the camels back for me as a fan

it was time to go , he had won 1 playoff game since elway had left

ateamstupid 04-02-2009 03:14 PM

The Broncos are asking for two first-rounders and a starting quarterback. So basically they turned a franchise quarterback getting paid $1 million into a bigger salary for maybe a lesser quarterback, and first round money for two more guys.

gales0678 04-02-2009 03:16 PM

i am a long suffering jet fan - cutler is not the answer

this coach wants to build around defense , fine , you get a Flacco type of QB - someone who will fit your system , they are not easy to find but this is the direction the jets must go

Or we could just go with one of the two guys we have. What 'system' do they have to fit that Ryan wants? Don't throw interceptions, hand the ball off to Leon and TJ? Sounds complicated. And then we could, you know, use that first-round pick on someone for our guy to throw to. Our receiving corps was a joke with Coles, now without him it's a one-hour standup.

Seems to me that the last thing you'd want to do with an unproven quarterback under center is saddle him with a good #2 (Cotchery) as his #1 and not much beyond that. I like the Chansellor and Clowney, but their ceilings seem to be #3 WR's.

That's not going to get it done. They need defensive players. They won't accept anything less than multiple picks and defensive players. They really don't need a QB in return. Denver can draft one and sign Garcia for 1 year. Or try out Leftwich. Right now its 2 1st round picks at least, QB is not a must.

Snyder has the tendency to overpay for veterans that are past their prime. Unless he change his ways, I just don't see his teams improving much at all.

Tell that to the Broncos. What I wrote wasn't my opinion, it's what's being reported.
