For those of you not in the tri state area - tetaboro is in NJ just north of the meadowlands

I think that was an idea but it was scapped rather quickly. The thing I find amazing is that they only cleared the GW bridge by about 1000 feet. Thank God everything turned out right. Once again a tremendous job by the pilot and crew!

As of a few hours ago, they hadn't found the black box yet. Ironic when a plan lands relatively intact they can't find it, but when the poor SOBs crash into a mountain, they get it right away.

I guess it has a pinging device/tracking..right?

I believe it has some sort of tracking device on it. I'm guessing that there isn't the usually frantic rush on getting the black box based on the available facts. Plus they know where it is, it is just a matter of retrieving it.

it does have a pinging device to track it. if it's still in the plane, then will be in the part of it submerged in the river (as of last pics I saw last night). probably wait until they pull the plane from the water to get it instead of trying to send a diver in to take it out.

who would REALLY want to put divers in the water today if they don't absolutely have too.:zz:

i would think they will be easy to find. water temp will make recovery difficult.

TheSpyder 01-16-2009 04:17 PM

The way people go after scrap metal, they may already be recovered and sold in a dark alley in NJ

It says that its common for engines that are underneath the wings to detach. They'll find them.

...but they better hurry. A few of the best scrappers (Hentz) in this neighborhood just purchased some scuba gear.

Not my area of expertise either, but I would have to say the engine itself and the propellers would be the stuff of worth. Or sell it wholesale to some history buff.

To answer your question, I haven't a clue. :D

they were also the first parts of the plane to hit the water, so took the brunt of the impact. I know of someone that took off from O'Hare on their way to Narita on a 747 in which 1 engine fell off over Iowa. Had to go back to O'Hare, but made it back easily.

propeller blades are custom for each engine (saw a history/science channel documentary on building them), so wouldn't be reusable according to that.
