between zenyatta running on saturdays and derby mounts he is liable to run into a situation that would not work out all that well. Its also very possible she could end up back in california.

Dutrow is friends with Mike, and same with IEAH, and I would say its not like you replace him because you feel like its a riding upgrade. the guy has won 12 BC races (all the original 7 to boot), he can ride the big races as good as anyone out there.

I'm sure he doesn't care too much, and with the vineyard thing going I can't see him moving his tack. I found it interesting he spoke so glowingly about her and she was still a maiden at the time. Ordinarily it wouldn't matter to me either, but I like Mike personally and want to see him do well.

Why not Kent D ?

dutrow generally used prado. desormeaux only got the mount on big brown because edgar got injured and couldn't ride him in a race, and they opted to leave KD on him.

I think this is kind of cool and I love that Mike Smith gets to keep the mount.
Plus, a horse actually running and not staying in the barn? Shocking!

If the owner has any sense, he/she will replace Mike Smith with someone who can ride a horse.

blackthroatedwind 11-07-2008 06:59 PM

I thought Mike Smith retired.

Come on.....his rides on Stardom Bound and Zenyatta were fantastic. It's very very hard taking a closer to the back of the pack vs a inferior field and then looping by the hopeless bunch to win going away.

Because Mike Smith hasn't won any big races on Stardom Bound?

Because Mike Smith has the uncanny ability to lose races that he should win. There is a reason why he can't stick around on the New York circuit.

Brett Farve won superbowls, but there are some in New York saying if he wasn't Brett Farve, Kellon Clemons should be given a shot to show what he can do. Mike Smith may have been a much better rider at one time, but today he is not a great jock. He may have once gotten mounts in New York, but he is not riding there because he would not be able to get consistent mounts.

yea, I am sure he is all broken up over winning Breeders Cups, Derby and just maybe the rider for two horse of the years...horrible situation for a guy with no talent anymore.

Anyone catch this quote from Iavarone?

Asked what impressed them the most about the filly, Iavarone said: “Her hip and shoulder. She's a big, beautiful filly and we know she can run. I think Rick is going to help her out. Hopefully, we can have a really big campaign (in 2009).”

Huh? "Rick is going to help her out?" How's that exactly? Is there something wrong with her that needs the horsemanship genius of Dick Jr.? While a move up would certainly be typical, I'm curious how Dutrow can have her 'better' than Chris Paasch has had her... Iavarone talks like this is some hopeless plug that needs that ol' Dutrow magic to be turned into a real racehorse... ala Benny the Bull or Kip Deville. Amazing knack for always saying the wrong thing.

Either that, or he's well aware of Paasch's record with 3yos.

Sounds like Bobby Frankel will be doing most of the helping anyways...
