Nice to see that a 400K yearling filly by Saarland can really run.

79 offerings from his crop through yearling sales - only two brought six figures - and that one was by far the most expensive.

I was wrong though - I didn't think Saarland would throw one horse worth a damn. This filly is obviously very nice.

I remember when Victory U.S.A (who cost a mere 525K) handily won her debut at Del Mar in near track record time - with Mike Smith pumping his fist and showboating before the wire. It was 6 lengths back to eventual two-year-old Grade 1 winning filly Hollywood Story in 2nd.

Victory USA's freshman sire at the time, Victory Gallop, now stands in Turkey.

One nice debut winner does not make a crop or sire - and this was BY FAR Saarland's most expensive yearling.

I dont know which was more shocking, Saarland winning with a firster or M Henning winner with a firster.
They should just go ahead give her the Eclipse award, afterall that really looked like a stellar bunch she beat today.

Did you like the Saarland filly that Pletcher bought at Keeneland in April for $300,000? I liked that filly but I did not expect her to go for that much. I thought she would go for $150,000-$200,000.

I bought one but already sold it. I thought they were pretty ordinary as a whole from what i saw. I really liked one at keeneland sept. late in the sale but went way too high for me.

I thought she was ok. A few of the Saarland's at the earlier sales just seemed outright awful to me and I didn't expect much from him to start with.

I think the only one that I liked from the 2 year old sales was the one that Pletcher bought. There was one other one at Ocala March that I was luke-warm on after watching the first preview, but I didn't like the horse's second preview.

There was actually one other one that I liked at Barrett's May. She only sold for $37,000 but she looked like a runner.

I doubt that Saarland will be anything special but he's probably alright standing for $5,000-$10,000.

You think an Unbridled out of Vtreaty is ok for 5 to 10k that was reasonablely successful on the track.. Thx your a peach..Oh BTW on 6/18 a filly smoked them in 57 at Belmont..I wait all night for post like these

He may be a bargain at $10,000. I have no idea. It's not an exact science. So far I have only seen a limited sample of his 2 year olds. The one that ran today looked good. And I thought that a couple of his other 2 year olds looked pretty good.

His stud fee seems reasonable to me.

Trainers and agents saying that they "don't like" the offerings from a particular stallion generally mean something to me. Obviously this filly was the start of her crop and her price shows it. (As an aside, I remember asking Todd Pletcher when Coronado's Quest's babies were 2, what he thought of CQ. Let's say that he was NOT impressed with the ones he had. With his breeding and looks I though CQ would do well. That's why he's Todd and I am not.)
There is a difference between a trainer/agent saying "I don't care for the Saarlands" when he's $10k and saying "I don't care for the Smarty Jones'" when he was $100k.
Let's face it, based on price alone the expectations are far higher for Smarty (or any high ticket horse) than the Saarlands etc. I don't recall a huge groundswell of horsemen praising the Distorted Humor's when they hit the weanling/yearling/2yo sales, yet he sired a Derby winner and then some in his first crop and is now one of the most expensive stallions in the world.

That's a fair point, but even in his price range there seems to be considerably more buzz attached to the Chapel Royals and the Friends Lakes.
