Hopeful candidate Rajjaas euthanized

Promising two-year-old colt Rajjaas was euthanized on Tuesday after breaking a leg in a workout at Saratoga Race Course.

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin and owner-breeder Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum's Shadwell Stable were considering the Elusive Quality colt out of Ridaa, by Seattle Slew, for the Hopeful Stakes (G1) on September 4 at Saratoga Race Course.

In his only start, Rajjaas won a 5 ½-furlong maiden race by 1 ¼ lengths on August 9 at Saratoga.

"Kiaran was going to work him three-eighths so we could have him ready should we decide to run him [in the Hopeful], but it didn't quite work out," Shadwell Vice President Rick Nichols said. "When you do have a nice one, it's special, and that's what hurts so bad. One, he was a homebred, and two, he had so much potential. To get something good like that and then to lose it, it really hurts."

Sanford Stakes (G2) winner Scat Daddy and Bashford Manor Stakes (G3) winner Circular Quay are expected for the Hopeful, along with Irish Ace, Pegasus Wind, and Unbridled Express. Pegasus Wind worked five furlongs in 1:00.27 on Wednesday on a sloppy Oklahoma track.—Jeff Lowe

Two More Breakdowns
By Hank Wesch
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER
September 7, 2006

Two horses that were injured during training sessions (at Del Mar) Tuesday and yesterday morning were euthanized, raising the fatality total for the meeting to 18.
On Tuesday, 2-year-old filly Lovely Lagoon, trained by Mike Marlow, fractured bones in her right front leg. Lovely Lagoon had one career start, a victory on April 12 at Santa Anita.

Yesterday, Lock And Key, a 4-year-old filly trained by Ben Cecil, fractured sesamoid and cannon bones in the right front leg while working out on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course. Lock and Key won her last start, an allowance race on Aug. 19, and was entered and scratched from Saturday's Palomar Handicap.

They were the seventh and eighth fatal breakdowns during morning workouts. Ten horses died from injuries incurred in afternoon races.

Rest in peace.

DETTORI SURVIVES SPILL
Tuesday 10th October 2006

Frankie Dettori suffered an up-and-down day at Leicester on Tuesday afternoon despite the easy victory of Glen Nevis.
The Italian was aboard 2/7 shot Life in the opening maiden but the once-raced colt faded out of contention in the closing stages as 25/1 outsider Maid To Believe took the honours.

Glen Nevis, trained like Life by Jeremy Noseda, took the second division with the minimum fuss at odds of 4/9 but disaster struck for the jockey in the ladbrokescasino.com Fillies' conditions Stakes.

His mount Royal Proposal, who was running in the colours of Godolphin for the first time, slipped going down to the start suffering a life-ending injury in the process.

Dettori was able to walk away from the incident as he watched stablemate Pure Illusion provide scant compensation for the yard when repelling Air Biscuit under Martin Dwyer.

Miss SC...
I just read through the list of angels and noticed Belle du Jour.
What a nice mare! Daughter of Dehere, winner of the Golden Slipper G1.
RIP Belle.

btw, I have a filly who's grand daddy is Dehere. Such a nice one to be around. I just hope she's half as good as Belle du Jour.

Capecloakanddagger, a really nice horse who always tried, euthanized after breaking down at Oak Tree on Sunday.

There's no link, no article, nothing but a memory. I guess he wasn't important enough in the scheme of things, but he was to me.

Rest in peace, beautiful boy.
