I know what you mean. Pepper's Pride reminds me of the 8th grade basketball team I played on back in 1990.
We finished the season 14-1, for a wining percentage of .933.
Then in 1996, the Chicago Bulls went 72-10 for a winning% of .878.

Despite the fact that our winning percentage was clearly better, people kept going on and on about how the '96 Bulls might be the best basketball team ever! What gives?

your 8th grade team probably would have ran circles around Jordan and those scrubs, just like Peppers Pride would do to Curlin.

granted she's not running against world beaters, but to show up and run everytime at any level without a hiccup is pretty amazing.

This is the time to play against her....the chances of her running a great race 16 times in a row is astronomical....there's a reason something like this has only been done by a few horses, it's hard!

At the very least, if you bet to show on the next horse you like...you'll get a dollar or two back...:)

Were they elevating her in level I'd be inclined to agree. They aren't though, they are holding her back at a level where she can't be beat. There is nothing amazing or even remotely impressive about that. Didn't she run like a 90+ Beyer last time? She should be taking on open stakes company.

If someone throws 15 Sevens in a row at a craps table, are the odds of a 16th seven astronomical? Hardly. Peppers Pride isn't trying to win 16 times in a row. She's trying to win a single race, and the odds are not astronomical. That's not to say she won't be overbet, though.

I have to root against her. I don't want even more horses to share, or worse, beat, the record that Citation and Cigar share, unless that horse is competing at the top level.

Good for her. I hope she breaks all records. It would be quite hard for me to criticize a guy with a home bred New Mexico horse whom has won over three-quarters of a million dollars in 14 starts with her. I thought the goal was to put your horse in spots they could win?? Or am I missing something here?? It would appear to me the trainer and owner should be applauded...not derided for their accomplishments with her. They have put her in places she can win and have made a profit with a thoroughbred. And there is something wrong with that??

I think the only time people might have a problem is when the 16 in a row record comes up. It's like hitting 80 homers in AAA...a great accomplishment, but I don't think it's apples to apples with Cigar.

OF course not...it is what it is. I credit them for having the success she has had. I'm thinking people won't think she's comparable to Citation or Cigar!!!:D :D But yes, it's comparing bowling balls to golf balls without question.

Almost no horse runs that many good races in a row. Eventually the odds of something happening will happen. Maybe she'll get pinched at the start. Maybe she'll be feeling sick and it will go undetected. She's going to be weighed close to 130 probably. That has to catch up to her at some point.

Okay maybe the odds of her doing it aren't astronomical but...no one runs 16 good races with little trouble without something happening.

I have no problem with her or her connections. As you say, nobody can really blame them for not seeking out horses that can actually run. If you can win that many races (and that much money) with a horse that doesn't have very much talent, why wouldn't you do it?

I don't think anybody has "derided" the trainer or the owner in this thread. We've just been having a little fun with the situation.

Yes, but you could have said pretty much the same thing after she won her 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, or 14th win in a row.

Because, of course, Cigar will be very upset. ;) Seriously, nobody who isn't already a fan of racing has any idea who Cigar (or likely, even Citation) is, and those who do know them aren't going to compare PP with them. I think it's kind of neat, and makes for a fun article in BH every time she runs. And who knows, it may get a few more people to the track when she's running.

(Besides, doesn't Silent Witness REALLY hold the modern-day record with 17 wins? I bet he'll be really pissed if she passes him.)
