I'd say it's a little premature to call Mineshaft "so-so" and "not having produced any runners of note yet" considering a whopping 3 of his produce (6 starts) have hit the track to this point...

At least with Mineshaft you can feel good that his running record was based on talent without added influence of chemical enhancement.

If they're anything like Mineshaft, they'll develop late anyway.

was about to say the same thing. ap indys are known to take time, and patience--the end result speaks for itself. i'm thinking mineshaft will be similar.
i think a sire from the family of seattle slew would be right for her.

I've never bred a horse in my life, but here's a dream list of what I'd look for. Nobody finds the dream, it's always a compromise.

I don't know the stallions well enough to know this, so maybe others that do know the stallions and what they throw can answer?

- middle-sized sire (not too big and doesn't throw huge babies, as Sumwon is a big girl)
- relatively compact conformation (but stayer type rather than sprinter type), very balanced with an athletic open way of moving, moderate with no extremes
- ** most important: throws good front legs consistently (good sturdy bone, absolutely no toeing out or back at the knees, a good big foot and has heel - good luck finding this in many thoroughbreds :) )
- deficient in Mr. Prospector in the pedigree
- precocity as 2-year-old not important
- tendency to have babies do better at 7f or over
- ** good temperment, sensible babies that are not crazy, stupid, and wired to the brink of insanity

If a stallion was deficient in ** I'd walk away and not consider him at all :D

I like Dixieland Band, too - nothing flashy, and not alot of graded stakes runners, but they seem to last and run at 2-3-4 years age

Now that I look at Charismatic.. not good on classic numbers at all.
So.. since Charismatic's sire and Mineshaft's sire had the same dam..
(Summer Squall is listed as pentioned not dead but he may be dead. Same difference)
The problem I see with all of these freshman sires is... unproven and the buzz may be over by the time Sumwon's baby hit auction. Not that I know a ding dong thing about this.

And a really good Broodmare sire (although I'm fondest of Deputy Minister) Poor guy though...I went with someone to take a mare to AP Indy and Dixieland Band was in the shed first...he had NO interest. I love the look of the yearlings by his son, Dixie Union, although I think he is overpriced. Athletic looking horses that don't look overly developed or will need a lot of time.

Yeah, hopefully by the time she retires there will be little Street Sense's, Curlin's, and Hard Spun's going through the sale rings.

I have a general breeding question that somewhat relates to sumwon...

What kind of sire would work well with a horse like 'sumwon'? She seems to be a middle distance type horse. she also has the turf pedigree from Moll and the dirt pedigree from Came home.

Should she be bred to a sprinter? Distance horse? or even possibly a turf horse? Just want to hear people's opinion's and reasoning. Any ideas?

i think rock hard ten would be a tremendous mistake. too much size, bad legs--and sumwon is a little long in the pastern, so that is something you would want to try to correct. with her size, i don't think a big horse would be a good idea.

I think the goal should be an 18 hand horse. Yes, Rock Hard 10 it is.

I was just saying name wise. I kinda think he needs little mares to equal out size wise. I wasn't being serious with my pick. Just thinking that naming the babies would be fun!!!
