OK, I'll weigh in and then leave the thread alone...I know folks don't want another sociological expose from me but...name the female trainers who are consider among the training elite? That's the truth of things, it's much harder for a woman to get started as a trainer and much harder for her to be successful...do you really think there is some reason why men are better trainers? When I worked on the backstretch, I met numerous female trainers...they were every bit the horsefolks that the guys were....but they didn't get the horses! Karen Hackney at Penn National has a good year if she wins 5 races out of 200 yet she knows her stuff...the glass ceiling is still there! Give this woman a few years and we'll see if (a) she gets horses that she doesn't own and (b) what she does with them. She's got the background, learned from the best...way to early too throw her under the bus.

Danzig 06-10-2007 05:40 PM

oh come on somer, she gets a hard time because she's a woman?! i think that's a bunch of bull...case in point, helen pitts, who gets nothing but praise on this board and elsewhere. but then, her horses do well! kristin mulhall gets some from both sides, but again, her horses perform. jenine sahadi is another who has worked hard, and has reaped rewards.

i still see unfair treatment--i experience it. but a person who does a poor job, and gets called out for it, shouldn't suddenly scream sexism just to see if it fits. it doesn't fit here.

huh? the trainer of risen star is as good or better than any horse trainer in history comparatively, lou rousell not only trains race horses but he use to own the fair grounds in new orleans and he has been a 30% win trainer for 20 years at the highest level in this sport....he has only been better than a guy named pletcher for 20+years, one of the most respected horse trainers in the world.
do you remember his name now?

I didn't say that...don't put words in my mouth! I said that women trainers have a more difficult time succeeding than men....that's hard to argue looking at leading trainers etc. As far as the board giving her a hard time...remarks about her hair, her smoking, her speech and other physical aspects of her person speak for themselves.

Where do you come up with this nonsense? So, I guess Todd is also on the list of people around the racetrack you hate. I can't wait to see the rest of the list. But, apparently Louis Rousell is a great trainer. Also good to know. Not that I am saying he was a bad trainer but your personal animus seems to cloud your mind from forming sane opinions.

That's one trainer that I have spoken negatively about...he has been successful no doubt but the way he handled Risen Star leading up to the Derby cost a great horse the Triple Crown...of course the owner played his part. Risen Star wins the Derby if Eddie D isn't told to fall back to another zip code!

i think she has a hard time getting good horses because of her stats, not because she's a woman.

well, according to this same poster, you're either a great trainer by cheating, or no good at all....so i don't know that i'd want slewpy calling me a great.

Like I said, I met a few female trainers and they all knew their stuff...Amy Albright, Karen Kuhns, Karen Hackney...yet when I talked to owners, all I heard was "they are women". I don't know that many trainers, male or female, that have high winning %'s right out of the gate. If you think women and men are treated equally on the backstretch well...maybe I should visit the tracks where you've been on the backstretch cause it wasn't the case where I was.

It is extremely tough for women in this game ( and many businesses ) but it doesn't seem like Jamie Sanders gets criticized here because of her gender.

Personally I wish her well.

well louie rousell use to own his own race track the fair grounds in new orleans and his win % in his career dwarfs most any trainer in the world, you said the trainer was some nobody of risen star he is a legend in louisianna horse racing history and the absolute best horsemen in this country are either from louisianna or from nebraska,,so its non-sense? you just said the trainer of risen star was some nobody that no one could remember, the only people that would know who louie rouseell was were anyone that had any knoweledge about horse racing,,,he is only one of the richest and most admired and influential people in the hisory of the sport
