well, whenever someone put up a thread (such as the one about ford) i always was a bit bothered that someone would post critical thoughts in such a thread, and at such a time.

so i'll just say that i hope falwell finds peace in repose.

DaHoss,
It's ok. It really is. I got over it.
In all honesty, I've only known one good "Jerry". It wasn't a Ford, a Bailey, or a Fallwell.
It was my pet rat. He grew to be 18 inches long before he died of old age.
I miss him so much. The grave I dug for him was over eight feet deep.
Now...for the other Jerry graves....I'll have to drink a six-pack before I visit them and hope my bladder holds out until the last one is finished.

I don't rejoice over anyone dying, but I do hope that in coverage of his passing the news outlets will portray him for what he really was and the things he said and the things he stood for instead of painting him as a real nice guy.

I admire his discipline to stay true to what he believes, even if I found most of it disgusting.

I've been reading a lot about this tonight, interested in seeing how pro-LGBT groups would respond. It's hard, because like the passage I'm going to quote says, we don't like to speak ill of people when they pass. It doesn't lead me to take any joy in his passing, but it's so hard for me to reconcile my feelings of sympathy for his family with my knowledge of his extreme intolerance and hateful words including the fact that I am personally responsible for 9/11. I guess it's going to be a strange tightrope to walk in dealing with the passing of a public figure who to many was a direct line to Jesus, who at the same time I think was a terrible, hateful follower of Jesus who had warped Christ's message in so many unintelligible circles that it had become completely unrecognizable when place side by side with Christ.

Dead or alive, that is not the kind of man who deserves our praise. Jerry Falwell wasn't afraid of being a bigot in life, we shouldn't be afraid of calling him one in death.

EDIT: I could not agree more....

In what ways did he change the message? I'm not super familiar with his stances.

You didn't quote, but I am guessing you were talking about my thought that he warped Christ's message.

I recommend reading to the bottom of this blog entry, at which point there are loads of links to Media Matters with some classic Falwell quotes. Red Letter Christians would not find any instance in which Jesus hated anyone. Whether He agreed or not, He never went out of his way to hurt others.

The mainstream media may whitewash his history to try to come off sympathetic, but his legacy will always be one of intolerance and shameful hate.

Not that I have a ton in common with him wrt politics and/or theology, but if you want to criticize, which is fine imho - say what you would if he were still alive, you might try being on-point as opposed to simply parroting what someone else says (let alone parroting folks who have a clear axe to grind).

Well I too have a clear axe to grind and have been an outspoken critic of Falwell since I was old enough to realize what he was all about. I'm having a hard time figuring out what I want to say about it, so I quoted a blog posting of someone whose words resonated with me at the time I read them. I need to process it and weigh the fact that I hate anyone's death with how much disdain I had for the man...that won't come for a few days. I'll be sure to provide a full report for you once I have all of my feelings sorted out.

You don't have the link to my blog, so you wouldn't know that I've talked about him before. I've referenced him as a terrible messenger for Christ, in my opinion, on my Myspace page. The only thing that has changed since he died this afternoon regarding your "say what you would if he were still alive" thing, is that I don't feel right speaking with the same vitriol towards him that I normally have in the past. That's human nature, or at least it is my nature, to not **** talk the dead the day of their passing. It's in poor taste, and I'll need a few days to digest the ramifications of what this means for me -- balancing my displeasure with the loss of human life with the pleasure of one less hateful voice on the airwaves.

So it's not "parroting" in the DTS sense, but rather a time for me to take a day or two and reflect on all of the things that I think about people like him and balance that with how I feel about anyone's passing. Sorry if I've so offended you in quoting a blog instead of posting my own thoughts about a man who most homosexuals considered Enemy #1 for his hate.
