My best fruit-based dessert is a Nectarine-topped Ginger Marscapone Tart with Peach Glaze thaT I make summers.

In the winter, I do excellent Baked Apples with Golden Raisens and Caramel Gelato or Poached Pears with Ginger Gelato and Hard Sauce. I also endlessly rely on Peach Melba, the forever monarch of fruit-based desserts...

I voted "Other, ellucidate." Though it is really elucidate. Hooves not available, so I'll mention that.

My other fruit is "$9 a gallon orange juice." Fresh right off the farm on Davie Rd, it's gone up from $6.50 during the last month or two.

I love talking about food, I did the gourmet thing for a long, long, time. The entertaining and all that jazz. Now, I don't have such opportunities anymore.

Such is life, though I still love good food.

none of that green stuff for me.....not a fan of it....has nothing to do with the fat...just don't like the taste.

I entertain all the time. Sarah gets spoiled with treats and I eat whatever I want and normally include a glass or 6 of red wine too. It's a wonderful life her and I lead

I love baked apples, and the poached pears sound wonderful. And I prefer golden raisins always, they're better, especially whe soaked in rum.

Now, . . . one that I was known for . . . was a frozen chocolate terrine with expresso, Grand Marnier, etc, layered with chopped pecans, sliced and topped with fresh whipped cream and raspberries,

Another was a New Orlean bread pudding with lemon sauce and Chantilly cream.

Those were always hits.

Damn SNT, you must live in the "high rent district". Does the convenient mart that stopped selling your DRF carry this $9.00 a gallon OJ?

And Kev, my dog, Zo, she eats as well as I do. But, I can't give her booze. She loves sweet ice tea. And I too, love red wine, but she can't have that either.

The smaller watermelons In SoCal are called "Dulcinea"...no seeds! Spectacular! They have a "season" also

Timm, what a lovely sounding name! They sound like those we have here. So good.

And DD, blood oranges are the strangest thing to me, I can't hang with them, they are just so deep colored and odd. Something we do have in the early winter that comes up from Florida is "Rubies", the deep red-not pink grapefruit, now those I love, but they're not as blood colored as the oranges, and we only have them for a short time.

I have not ever met a SoCal that did not love guacamole. Never.

I feel a desire welling up y'all, I can't fight it any longer, I can't sustain. I'm just going to have to succumb to it and let it go . . . in the freezer are three little pints of unopened Haagen Dazs, one Vanilla Bean, one Strawberry, and one Coffee.

I'm going to have to fix a small bowl with a scoop of each. All this good food talk has made me abandon my senses. I love Haagen Dazs, (really love Chunky Monkey too.)

I'm gonna be really decadent and fix a small brandy glass of Tia Maria to go with it.

Wish you could join me. Later.

Hmmm... I can't compete with the Haagen Daz, but I DO have an ice cold beer in my hand right now. That'll have to do. ;)

Steve - O and others,

As many know I am now making my living in produce. I will have to take some time tomorrow morning and give you some break down on whats what in this dept.

Oranges - Cara Cara no thanks, go with the Blood, also known as Moro

Cherries, yeah they are a little pricey

Pink Lady apples just don't do it for me or many customers as are stores sales reflects just that. Fuji, Gala, Red Delicious, Cameo (great for baking and applesauce) and Granny Smith rule the roost in sales

TRY UGLI FRUIT! Its a mix of an orange and grapefruit, expensive, but great! Its green and ugly!

I'll holla back tomorrow about lots of other stuff.

Grits 04-01-2007 09:09 PM

Thanks TwoM. I'll look forward to it.

Caj, my ice cream was delicious, and my drink will be good later for sleep.

For starters, once the peel comes off the softball size thing, it's the size of a tennis ball. And it seemed no different to me than any 3 for $1.00 navel orange I get in Florida all the time...

So I get to thinking.. Has everyone noticed these 'new' fruits that keep popping up?

It started with the Rainier Cherries.. OK great. a yellow cherry that tastes like a plum.. WINNER.. Available three weeks a year.

Then we got the wacky new apples.. Fuji.. Pink Lady.. etc.. Whatever. They're apples. They don't fall too far from the tree if you know what I mean.

Have you had the White Nectarines? A home run.. And I have a great appetizer salad recipe for Bibb lettuce with white nectarine slices and blackberries on a parmesan crisp with a lime vinagrette, so the white nectarines are a winner...

There's others.. I can't even think of them all...

'New' fruits.. Kooky... And don't even get me started on the broccofleur...

Racist.

Sightseek 04-02-2007 06:46 AM

I've been buying Pink Lady Apples for years...they are less acidic.
