Retired Ballycassidy was 'credit to his trainer'

by Neil Morrice

CONNECTIONS of Ballycassidy have paid tribute to the 12-year-old, who has been retired after a career in which he amassed close to £300,000 and landed the Summer Plate at Market Rasen and the Channel 4 Trophy for Peter Bowen.

Also a runner in three Grand Nationals at Aintree, Ballycassidy is to spendhis retirement at trainer Peter Bowen's Haverfordwest stables after failing to show his old sparkle when last to finish in the veterans' race at Newbury on Saturday.

Roddy Owen, one of Ballycassidy's owners, referred to him as “a credit to his trainerand one who gave his owners fantastic pleasure over several years”.

Owen said: “He was absolutely fantastic from the day we bought him and followed a string of novice chase wins with a cracking second to Strong Flow in the Feltham Chase at Kempton.

“He ran in three Grand Nationals and put in some exhilarating jumps, especially the year he came down at Valentine's when he turned a somersault with Leighton Aspell on board. When Denis O'Regan rode him the following year the horse turned left at the Canal Turn while Denis went straight on.”

Owen added: “Peter's son Micky is very fond of him and I hope he'll ride him as a hack.”

I'll tell you what I wonder. I wonder if there is really something wrong with him. McGlaughlin was pretty sure there was nothing wrong physically after the last race and said he just was distance challenged. I just have a feeling in the back of my head that they decided that they would rather not have him go to the track and possibly be exposed more and so they end things now. Out of respect for McGlaughlin, I'm going to chose to believe he's really injured. But I can't help having that feeling.

You can get Lemon Drop Kid or More than Ready for 30k but you would want this hilarious horse....

30k...wow.

and an injury retroactive to the donn, covers both losses pretty nicely, doesn't it? so much for ice cold legs....

pgiaco 03-07-2008 05:50 PM

30k is pretty steep for basically a one hit wonder. Scav, More Than Ready stands for 60k now.

Ok, you cna still get LDK for 35k then, 30k for that horse is RIDICULOUS...he will be 10k in two years, maybe even 7500

Might I say that 35k for LDK is a steal IMO. Especially if you are looking for a router, which many people are not...

pgiaco 03-07-2008 05:53 PM

Might not even be in KY in 2 years
