12 year old Toulouse-Lautrec (IRE), who was 2nd at Exeter today (Axminster Carpets Devon Marathon Handicap Chase)...
Toulouse-Lautrec, who returned from a layoff with a solid effort over hurdles earlier in the month, stayed on dourly to finish runner-up in this event for the second occasion. He sadly died shortly after the race, however. Jump in peace. |

His name was Fifty Fifty and he had run in the HK Derby and the Mile in the 2004 / 2005 season... ran with Vengeance of Rain, Russian Pearl, ran with the best of them.
http://www.hkjc.com/images/Horse/D131_l.jpg I know that he was difficult from reading the incidents reports but I didn't realize that he had died... I'm assuming it was in February as that's when he was "retired". His name is on retirements but i didn't know till today that it belonged here. January 6th... After leaving the Parade Ring and prior to entering the track, FIFTY FIFTY became fractious, reared and dislodged C K Tong, its rider. C K Tong sustained an injury to his right wrist and acting on the advice of the Club medical officers that he was not fit to fulfil his riding engagement, the Stewards permitted him to be substituted by W M Lai. There was a delay while W M Lai was weighed out to take this riding engagement. Then after entering the track, FIFTY FIFTY again became fractious, causing W M Lai to be dislodged on two occasions. FIFTY FIFTY then galloped riderless to the Start and in doing so made contact with a lead horse which as a result was severely injured. After arriving at the Start, FIFTY FIFTY was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of FIFTY FIFTY. The start of this race was delayed for a considerable time while the injured lead horse was treated by the Veterinary Surgeon and removed from the track. In the circumstances, the Stewards decided FIFTY FIFTY must perform satisfactorily in a pre-race parade before being permitted to race again. * * * Poor pony. Fifty Fifty raced twice after that and although he was having a good season, he was (surprisingly) 11th both times. Wonder if he was hurt. Oh well. Rest in peace. |

It wasn't a huge accident, I don't even believe the horse went down, Dooley didn't say anything and normally he will say a horse is down, just pulled up and vanned off, but I didn't hink he wouldn't make it. Very sad though...an up and comer, even won a G1. RIP..Screen your Friend....:( Very sad story on fifty fifty and the pony. |

Also Silver Nat.... http://www.nola.com/horseracing/inde..._memory_a.html In the fifth race, for $5,000 claimers, Silver Nat broke his left front leg while running on the final turn and was euthanized. Jockey James Graham, who was thrown from Silver Nat and appeared to be struck by the trailing Fabulous Freebord, rode in the next race. Graham took off the rest of his mounts. Britt McGehee, his agent, said after the races that Graham felt stiffness but was hopeful about riding Thursday. As I said in the waiting thread this is highly unusual at the Fairgrounds, I think a black cloud is hanging over Gentilly. RIP boys....:( |
Secret Savings looses battle with laminitis 03 Jan 2009
Emirates Park Stud Emirates Park Stud has announced that it is with a considerable degree of sadness for His Excellency Nasser Lootah and all concerned with Emirates Park to report that stud stalwart Secret Savings (USA) met with his demise a few days before Christmas following a long-term battle with laminitis. One of the cornerstones of the Emirates Park racing and breeding enterprise, Secret Savings was forced out of stud service at the beginning of the 2008 breeding season when incapable of covering his intended book of mares. Following a tendon operation undertaken to bring relief to the injury and hopefully rectify the problem long-term, Secret Savings was put in a cast but subsequently broke a humerus. No other decision could be made but to humanely put to sleep the imported son of Seeking the Gold in order to put him out of his suffering. Emirates Park director of operations Dr Sahu and his staff had done everything in their powers to manage the problem over a number of years and probably extended the stud career of Secret Savings by a handful of years due to their professionalism and expert care. In such time, Secret Savings has enhanced his name as one of Australia's most consistent stallions and he will long be remembered as one of the finest representatives of the Mr Prospector sireline ever to become available to domestic broodmare owners. At the time of his death, Secret Savings was accredited with 265 individual winners of which no fewer than 36 are stakes horses. In 2008 alone, Secret Savings was represented by the Group/Listed winners Swiss Ace (QTC Sir Byrne Hart S-G2), Caymans (MRC Sandown Guineas-G3) and Acorns (QTC J.F. Meynink S-LR), as well as another three stakes placegetters. However, Secret Savings will best be remembered for his success in the Group 1 AJC Doncaster Handicap in the red, blue and white colours of His Excellency Nasser Lootah, and for siring the triple Group 1 winning racemare Shamekha, who also raced in the livery of Emirates Park’s principal. The 2009 yearling sales series will see the penultimate crop of Secret Savings offered for sale, beginning with the Magic Millions Gold Coast premier sessions staged during the second week of January. |
I thought I'd edit these into the final farewell thread but it's too late to edit and since i don't want to annoy anyone by bumping it up...

Also have been told these are all occuring in the same area on the track, but can't confirm. "Track superintendent Brian Jabelmann said he examined the part of the track where the breakdowns occurred and found no problems. "I didn't see a thing,'' Jabelmann said. "It was just one of those things. It was freakish. And the same trainer ... not that it would have been any better if someone else had lost a horse. It's hard to get over the shock of one, then to have another one go.'' Doesn't seem freakish to me if these are occuring in the same area. RIP to all...already a tough year. |
