wait a while.

Wait a While's racing career is over

Wait a While, the champion 3-year-old filly of 2006, has been sent to Kentucky to be bred in 2009 and will not race again, according to Michael McCarthy, trainer Todd Pletcher's assistant trainer in California.

Wait a While, 5, finished third in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita on Oct. 24, three-quarters of a length behind Forever Together. She ends her career with 12 wins in 24 starts and earnings of $2,394,917.

"She's in Kentucky," McCarthy said. "She will be bred. Racing is over for her."

Wait a While won 11 stakes, including three Grade 1 races - the American Oaks and Yellow Ribbon of 2006 and the 2008 Yellow Ribbon in September. She won seven other graded stakes, including the Grade 2 Ballston Spa Handicap at Saratoga in 2007 and 2008.

McCarthy said that breeding plans have not been finalized.

It's hard to decide which of those three affects the game the most. Shark ( he's a Flanders...right? ) really hits me hard.

I couldn't remember if it was Surfside or Flanders....but actually thought he wasn't old enough. He must have been Surfside's first foal. I feel like he ran third in his debut.

Did he? I have no idea.

Anyway, maybe you can go visit him at stud. :D

blackthroatedwind 11-30-2008 10:18 AM

I tried to avoid seeing him race.....why exactly would I want to see him having sex?

my miss storm cat 11-30-2008 10:23 AM

Good point.

my miss storm cat 11-30-2008 10:26 AM

You know who you should go visit?

Colonial Colony.

1. Cause I love him to death and 2. cause i remember reading he wasn't exactly doing well at stud.

Maybe some tips, some motivational speaking? Just a thought...

Thanks in advance.

Lukas had him. Ran him way above his head early and never really developed after that. I know that's a shocking revelation for a Lukas-trained horse...

at least her 2yo has shown some ability, Saturday's result not included (heard he may have gotten hurt.)

Linngari.....

Beloved globtrotter, former flagbearer for Herman Brown, dual Group 1 winner, and consumate traveller.....

He ran in England, in Dubai, Germany, Hong Kong, Turkey, and in most of these places multiple times. There were other countries, I just can't think of all of them right now.

He bows out for Sir MIchael Stoute with a gallant run in the Hong Kong Cup where he was 3rd.

Happy retirement to the little horse who could.

Nice little story about retiree Dixie Poker Ace who has a stakes race named in his honor running today at the Fairgrounds.

Everything is ‘Peachy' for Dixie Poker Ace These Days

NEW ORLEANS, La.- Horse lovers rest assured. Dixie Poker Ace, a winner of the first three editions of the Louisiana Champions Day Turf at Fair Grounds, has been dealt a winning hand during his retirement!
"He's doing very well, considering that he's a horse who just turned 22 years old (New Year's Day)," said Lora Pitre, owner/manager of Peach Lane Farms in Opelousas. "He's sharing a paddock with another retired gelding, and they get fed twice a day. In fact, he's living the life of Riley."
Dixie Poker Ace, for whom Saturday's featured grass stakes restricted to Louisiana-breds is named, was the top money earner among Louisiana-breds at the time of his retirement. Also, in his third win in the Champions Day Turf, as a 7-year-old, the gelding established a track record of 1:42 for the about 1 1/16-mile distance over the Stall-Wilson turf course that still stands.
"He's still a very noble horse," said Pitre, a "hands-on" farm owner who does her own foaling with the help of handful of farm employees. "He's been everything a race horse is supposed to be since he came to me 13 years ago, and I've had him here with me at my farm since about six months after he stopped racing."
Although Pitre has about 100 horses on her farm, including six stallions, a number of boarders and a host of broodmares, that equine total also includes 13 retirees in addition to Dixie Poker Ace.
"Those guys deserve a place to live, too," she said. "I only charge their owners for feed. I don't make any money on them."

Princess Coup.

Not surprising, she looked like she wasn't enjoying it any more when she was over in Australia a couple of months ago. Great horse - won 12 races, 10 other times in the first 3 from 31 career races, and $4.23 million.
