http://news.bloodhorse.com/article/47235.htm Barn Fire Kills Sire of Countess Diana by Leslie Deckard A Sept. 25 fire at Velocity Farms near Benton, La., killed 12 horses, including Deerhound, sire of champion Countess Diana. The cause of the fire is being investigated. Shanna Berry, who co-owns the farm with Sandi Blackburn, said in addition to Deerhound (Danzig—Lassie Dear, by Buckpasser), the Thoroughbred stallions killed included: Banderas (Seattle Slew—Bandore, by Forty Niner), El Lobo (El Corredor-Justine, by Pirates Bounty), Filmore (Concern— Quality Gal, by Full Pocket), and Wild Wildcat (Forest Wildcat—Pent Up Kiss, by Pentelicus). The remaining horses that were killed were Quarter Horses, Paint Horses, and Friesians. “You never think something like this could happen to you,” Berry said. “This is one of the worst things imaginable.” Berry added that three Thoroughbred stallions, Aggadan (Carnivalay—Georia K, by Horatius), Raska Deputy (French Deputy—Raska, by Rahy), and Tigerline (Unbridled’s Song—Silken Cat, by Storm Cat) were turned out in paddocks at the time of the fire and were not injured. Countess Diana won the 1997 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr.I) the year she was champion. A necropsy is planned for Sept. 25 on all the horses that died in the fire. * * * Fat Boy (Singapore), on the 24th, Analyst, Golden Fortune, and Alibaba (Macau), and 6 YO Ussmaka (AUS)... |
Barn Fire Kills Sire of Countess Dianaby Leslie Deckard
A Sept. 25 fire at Velocity Farms near Benton, La., killed 12 horses, including Deerhound, sire of champion Countess Diana. The cause of the fire is being investigated. [/i] My first thought is sorrow. My 2nd thought is that I am slow to trust anything or anyone out of Louisiana. For the record, I've held that view for many years before Louisiana politicians f'd up Hurricane Katrina prep and response. I'd be checking insurance and "time, motive and opportunity" with a microscope on this one. If I'm wrong, I really sincerely apologize. |
Quote:
Your 2nd thought was a totally ridiculous & offensive statement on a very tragic situation. http://www.ktbs.com/news/Racehorses-...-chance-17674/ "Sheriffs investigators and the state fire marshal are investigating the fire at Velocity Farms, which is located off Highway 3 behind Benton High School. A dog trained to sniff for accelerants went through the remains of the barn today but found no evidence of arson, investigators said. The barn and stalls were made of metal, investigators said. There was hay scattered all over it and the office and tack room were made of wood, firefighters said. The fire is believed to have started near the office, investigators said. "We don't have any reason to believe this was arson, but we're going to wait and hear from the state fire marshal," sheriff's Lt. Ed Baswell said. Because racehorses are involved, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was also involved in the case. " |

Yeah, cause the kind of things you were imagining NEVER ever happen! Especially in Louisiana. |
You should have just stuck with your first thought.....
Your 2nd thought was a totally ridiculous & offensive statement on a very tragic situation. OK, I apologize in that I see some people might find the thought offensive. But, I submit others may not. I think we all know about insurance money and horse harm cases of the past. Most have heard the stories surrounding Alydar's death. It didn't get much press connection, but the recent publicly identified mistress of John Edwards also had a family connection to a scheme to kill horses for insurance money. Rielle Burns, the mistress, was the daughter of James Druck. She was raised in Ocala horse country. James Druck was implicated in an insurance scheme to kill show horses. He was fingered by Tommy "The Sandman" Burns in a scheme to electrocute horses so the cause of death might look similar to colic. http://www.ocala.com/article/2008081...aised_in_Ocala I will admit that I have personal feelings and experiences about Louisiana I formed long before Katrina. I'll qualify that I've had some great experiences and met wonderful good people in Louisiana, too. In May I had a great time in New Orleans, and meandered west on I-10 and met some great people in Breaux Bridge. I've worked in Shreveport, and met many Louisiana natives around the country on business and in social situations. As a result, I've often jested with some seriousness that I thought if one was born in Louisiana there was some sort of inherent obligation to tell "a fib" at least once a day. Again, only partially joking. We can go back to Huey P. Long, to Edwin Edwards, to Eddie DeBartolo and even to Jim Garrison and the Lee Harvey Oswald case and the history of graft, skimming, crime, and lying is well established for Louisiana. OK. It's established in other places, too. But I think the fabric of Louisiana history makes it natural for some to have initial thoughts of possible criminal intent in this case. |
Hokipopter
5yo mare - 18 starts, 3 wins, 5 seconds, 3 thirds Not the most talented horse around but she always tried her hardest. Her brave and close 2nd at Ellerslie today was one big effort too many for her big heart, and she collapsed on the track after the race. Heartbreaking to watch, but the great memories she gave her owners will hopefully help them get through this. |

If Magic, ed or Moodwalker know anything more hope they'll add it in. Rest in peace. |

I wrote out a really long post and decided not to include it. Look at it this way... it's one last little celebration of their lives, one last little show of appreciation and respect. It can be a little hard when someone asks me to include a particular horse here.... if I've never heard of them. I never do mind. People have reasons why they don't want to post it (I guess). I'm just doing the best i can (that sounds fake and horrible. What i mean is they all deserve their names here, to be remembered that one last time. I try to remember to post those names when I come across them or when someone asks me to). So even the ones who, in life, we didn't know? It's nice to stop for a second and know that they existed anyway and that they were part of this thing we all love. Angels all. |

Accident Kills Hussler's Conqueror :(
By Peter Staples Wednesday, 8 October 2008: Talented Victorian mare Aceland Street, who once beat Horse of the Year Weekend Hussler, has died after a paddock accident while spelling in Victoria. The mare had to be put down after she impaled herself on a wooden fence post. “We are devastated about what has happened to the mare,” said her Tasmanian owner Alwyn Shaw. “It is very sad to lose any horse but especially so when it as a result of such a freak accident. “The loss is double-edged because we were looking to a prosperous stud career for Aceland Street.” Aceland Street was trained at Caulfield by Jim Mason and had won three of her 13 starts. She will be well remembered for her maiden win at Sale as Weekend Hussler finished fourth in the event when making his debut. Aceland Street was expected to be one of Shaw's foundation mares at his Aceland Stud at in Tasmania. A shoulder injury will prevent jockey Jodi Snell from representing Tasmania in the Dr le Winns Ladies Championship at Moonee Valley on Friday night. Snell, who won the annual race last year, dislocated her shoulder when she was thrown from an unraced two-year-old at John Blacker's stable last Friday. She was hoping physiotherapy would enable her to ride at Moonee Valley but she has been ruled out on medical advice. “The doctors have advised me not to resume riding for a month because it will pop back out again if I try riding,” Snell said. http://www.racingandsports.com.au/ra...asp?NID=136843 |
I'll never spell anything near a wooden fence post, that's for sure.

More on Oriental Tiger, from Racing Post...
Oriental Tiger found dead in stable David Conolly-Smith THE story of Oriental Tiger, the ill-starred German five-year-old who lost a Group 1 win earlier this year after a positive test, reached a tragic climax this week when he was found dead in his box at Mulheim. An autopsy revealed that the son of Tiger Hill, who won two other Group races at Cologne, had broken a pelvis and died of internal bleeding. Trainer Uwe Ostmann said: "It's a tragedy and a very sad day for our whole stable." Oriental Tiger was always a headstrong and difficult character and had tried to run out on several occasions. He finished third to Schiaparelli in the 2006 Deutsches Derby but his record before this year was one win in 11 appearances. He began this season with Group 3 and Group 2 wins in April but then ran a poor fifth behind It's Gino at Baden-Baden. After a break of almost three months, he returned with an astounding performance in the Group 1 Rheinland-Pokal on August 17, when he made all the running and was 15 lengths clear at halfway and came home seven lengths and half a length in front of Kamsin and Papal Bull. Little more than two weekslater it was announced that he had tested positive for dexamethasone and he was disqualified. He was being treated - not for the first time - for a skin allergy. The injections contained cortisone and it had not cleared his system in time. |
How sad ....
I remember having an argument with someone somewhere in forum land that said horses do not just get injured in their stalls ... Several other people jumped in and could not fathom a horse self-destructing in its house ... They do ... |

Breeders Cup Mile winner Val Royal died while on stud duty in Brazil
|
His name was Air of Vigilance.
Excerpt from an unknown webite that someone sent me, asking that he be added here. On one side of the country, millions tuned in to watch the annual running of the Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racetrack while on the other side of the country, four year old gelding Air of Vigilance (AUS) was quietly euthanased after fracturing his off hind pastern while running, Bunbury 4th November, 2008. This group of owners may well remember the first Tuesday in November (2008) quite differently to others. |
