Towy Girl (4) and Arctic Desert (8 years old) at Kempton on Wednesday.

Excerpt, comments on running (Racing post)

Sadly, there was a nasty incident over four furlongs from home, when Kaballero appeared to clip heels with Tuning Fork and fell, which ended up bringing down Arctic Desert, who brought down Imperium and Towy Girl, and made Billy Cray on Bollywood unseat. The rider on Tuning Fork was found to have caused considerable interference by careless riding, in that he had allowed his mount to drift right towards the rail, and he was suspended for seven days.

This one from the Alameda Fair was missed....I know because I was there. Forever Chocolate was the favorite, or close to it. Looked to me like she was in discomfort of some kind in the paddock pre-race, and I lamented afterwards that no one from her connections other than the walker appeared to be around to witness....

07-04-082 STEWARDS’ INQUIRY – ACCIDENT – Seventh Race – NO CHANGE

The stewards posted the inquiry sign to investigate the cause of an accident at the 4 ½
after three horses fell and unseated their jockeys. After a thorough review, the
stewards affirmed the order of finish posted on the infield tote board.
Tapes showed that #2 FOREVER CHOCOLATE, ridden by Alex Bisono, collapsed while
racing mid-pack and fell toward the inside rail throwing Bisono. Two trailing horses, #3
THREE ACROSS with Jorge Herrera in the saddle and #8 D’WEATHERMAN, Saul Arias
up, were unable to avoid the downed horse and the two horses fell dislodging the
jockeys.

Track veterinarian Dr. Robert Connolly reported that FOREVER CHOCOLATE was
deceased at the scene and there was no evidence that the horse suffered any
catastrophic skeletal injuries. The cause of death will be determined through a post
mortem examination. THREE ACROSS and D’WEATHERMAN recovered their legs after
the spill and were captured without incident. THREE ACROSS suffered minor scrapes
and D’WEATHERMAN incurred a three inch laceration.

Alex Bisono escaped unscathed and was cleared to ride the next race. Jorge Herrera
complained of shoulder pain and Saul Arias suffered head injuries. Both riders were
taken to local hospitals for further examination

After the fact edit: Just realizing the link was for three sets of minutes over the three part-weeks of the meet. Echo's was for the 3rd and final week.

From South Africa Racing...

WENDYWOOD DEAD
(no author listed)

The best middle distance 3 year old filly of last season, Wendywood, has died.

The Sean Tarry stable was on a high after National Colour's second in one of Europe's strongest Group 1 sprints only to find out that their other stable star has died. Like National Colour, Wendywood was owned by Chris Van Niekerk

The filly was the toast of the South African racing scene late last season when she won the Woolavington Stakes for fillies over 2000m at Greyville. The race is traditionally regarded as a pointer to the Vodacom July. Wendywood was having only her second start when she won this group 1 event. She was beaten only once.

She suffered a bout of colic on Friday night according to stable sources.

Pardon my ignorance, but how often does a suspensory problem lead to euthanization? Doesn't that seem a little extreme?

some soft tissue injuries can be catastrophic, and be more serious and harder to recover from than a bone break.

Racing Post...

Champion Bumper winner Pizarro put down

Tony O'Hehir

PIZARRO, twice a Grade 1 winner as a novice chaser and winner of the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham in 2002, has been put down at trainer Edward O'Grady's farm in County Tipperary.

O'Grady said: “Pizarro had been retired and was suffering from emphysema and a tumour on his lung. Sadly, he had to be put down on Friday morning.”

An 11-year-old, Pizarro had not run under rules for almost three years, and he had been pulled up onhis only point-to-point start at Punchestown in March.

He won all three bumpers he contested, the first of them when trained by Eddie Hales, before joining O'Grady after being bought by Edward Wallace and his wife, Trish.

Partnered by Jamie Spencer, he beat Rhinestone Cowboy by a neck in the Cheltenham Festival bumper with Back In Front, Thisthatandtother and Iris's Gift filling the next three places – a race rated the best bumper ever run on Racing Post Ratings.
O'Grady said: “It wasprobably the most memorable finish to a Cheltenham Festival bumper and there was also the tension of a stewards' inquiry.

“Pizarro was a very good horse and he had a good record at Cheltenham, where he ran Hardy Eustace to a length in the Royal & SunAlliance Hurdle the following year. We thought he was very unlucky in the 2004 Royal & SunAlliance Chase when he was brought down at the second-last, closing on the leaders.”

Pizarro achieved Grade 1 success in the William Neville & Sons Chase at Leopardstown and in the Dr PJ Moriarty Chase at the same track.

His last appearance under rules came at Punchestown in October 2005, when third in the Listed Daily Star Chase.

I am sad to report that my avatar puppy, our Border Collie Hobbes, is no longer with with us, having succumbed to kidney disease in August. He was twelve and he never gave us any indication he was seriously ill - he was so tough and stoic - until his final seizure. The house feels empty without him.

I have replaced Hobbes in my avatar because I can't bear seeing him looking back at me so trustingly.

Indian Charlie 09-21-2008 06:57 PM

Losing a border collie seems tougher than losing other pets to me.

Sorry for your loss. I've had two of them and when they both died, it was extra difficult.

I'm truly sorry for your loss, Pedigree Ann

Losing a family member of 12 years is tough.

When I was a kid of four, my parents got me a cat. She died at the age of 19, and I actually made a trip from south Florida to northern Ohio to be with her when it was clear she was about to say goodbye.

One thing I appreciate however, is that the experience with her passing subsequently made it a tad easier in the years since when I was encountered the passing of other pets. And loved ones.

As trite as it sounds, it will get better.

Good thoughts with you.
