Big Farewell For County Tyrone Chris Scholtz Friday, 19 September 2008: Newcastle's favourite horse will be given the send off he deserves with a “Farewell County Tyrone” race day at Broadmeadow on September 27. Veteran stayer County Tyrone brought down the curtain on his marvelous career when he produced yet another big-hearted performance to finish third in Thursday's $185,000 Newcastle Gold Cup. Trainer Kris Lees confirmed that County Tyrone is to be groomed as a NSW Police mount but not before his local fans can give him a send off at Broadmeadow. The Newcastle Jockey Club has announced that the Broadmeadow meeting on Saturday week will be “County Tyrone Day:” with free entry for all punters, County Tyrone memorabilia and a final parade by the 10-year-old gelding. "We will have hats and memorabilia for everyone that comes to honour County. He deserves a day like that," said NJC chief executive John Curtis. An emotional Lees was proud of County Tyrone's final race day effort, some eight seasons after he began racing as a two-year-old when he was trained by his father, the late Max Lees. "What a way to go out. He just refused to give in," Lees said. "Yes, I am sad, a horse like this is once in a lifetime for a trainer. “He has been the last link to Dad around the stables in a physical sense but it is so much more, he owns the place. "The owners have agreed to let him stay with me for another week, so he will be a special star at the Newcastle meeting on Saturday week. "That will be a day-and-a-half for us all." County Tyrone was having his 87th race start in the Newcastle Cup. The$16,650 he picked up for third place took his career earnings to $2,266,420 from nine wins, eight seconds and nine thirds. He won three Group 1 races - the Sydney Cup, AJC Metropolitan and QTC Derby - and contested six Sydney Cups, two Melbourne Cups and was placed twice in the Newcastle Cup, a race Lees always wanted to win with the gelding. |

http://www.drf.com/news/article/98376.html * * * From Racing post... Passage Of Time retired David Milnes PASSAGE OF TIME, who kick-started a revival in fortunes for Henry Cecil when winning in Group 1 company in France nearly two years ago, has been retired. Owned by Cecil's longstanding patron Prince Khalid Abdullah, the daughter of Dansili enjoyed her finest hour when beating Soldier of Fortune in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud in November 2006. The decision to retire Passage Of Time was taken after she finished fifth to Lush Lashes in the rearranged Yorkshire Oaks at Newmarket last month. Cecil said: "Passage Of Time retires as a Group 1 winner and I'm sure she will prove a valuable addition to her owners broodmare band. She was very consistent and was a winner in each of the past three seasons." A three-time winner as a juvenile, culminating in her success in France, Passage Of Time spent the winter as ante-post favourite for the Oaks and reinforced her position at the head of the market with a narrow victory over Sweet Lilly in the Musidora Stakes atYork last year. Sent off the 9-4 favourite at Epsom, she could only finish eighth behind stablemate Light Shift. After a break Passage Of Time recaptured her best form with minor placings in both the Prix Vermeille at Longchamp and theBreeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Monmouth Park. This season she returned to winning ways when overcoming Bankable in the Steventon Stakes at Newbury in July and was beaten by just two heads when third in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood. In total, Passage Of Time won five times from 13 races and over £335,000 in prize-money. |

HAPPY RETIREMENT. Thanks for the memories. Perfect Drift retired at age 9 By STEVE ANDERSEN ARCADIA, Calif. - Perfect Drift, the winner of more than $4.7 million in a career that included a third-place finish in the 2002 Kentucky Derby, has been retired, trainer Richard Mandella said on Sunday. Perfect Drift finished third in the final start of his career, the Windy Sands Handicap at Del Mar on Sept. 1. Mandella said that discussions with owner William Reed led to the decision to retire Perfect Drift after 11 wins in 50 starts and earnings of $4,714,213. Perfect Drift was winless in four starts this year. The Windy Sands was the only time that he finished in the first three. He was fourth in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile and eighth in the Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup earlier this year. "We could not quite get him to the level that we wanted," Mandella said. "We were thinking of taking one more shot. We thought it over and that’s generally the time you should stop. He’s in good shape." Perfect Drift, a 9-year-old gelding, was trained for much of his career by Kentucky-based trainer Murray Johnson. For Johnson, Perfect Drift won such stakes as the 2003 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs and the 2005 Washington Park Handicap at Arlington Park. |

King of the Roxy (Littleexpectations--Marrakesh, by Bold Forbes) also ran second in the Saratoga Special Breeders’ Cup Stakes (gr. II) and Barbaro Stakes (gr. III). He was bred in Ohio by Deborah D. Kopatz and was voted 2007 Ohio Horse of the Year.
“He is a very masculine, correct, and powerful horse that stands over a lot of ground,” said Barry Irwin of Team Valor. “He should make somebody a very attractive stallion prospect.” Whatever, Barry. I guess that's why he made all of 12 starts. Who is this elusive "somebody" anyways? My guess..........Dufus McNoclue.... |

Alwajeeha (Dixieland Band), who
won the $500,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes (G1) on Saturday, probably will be retired. Owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum’s Shadwell Stables, the three-year-old filly has won three of nine career starts and banked $486,927 in career earnings. “Sheikh Hamdan normally retires fillies after their three-year-old season,” said Neal McLaughlin, assistant and brother to Alwajeeha’s trainer, Kiaran McLaughlin. “He will probably do that with her; she has nothing left to prove.” i.e., she's done enough, in sheikh-speak |

With that said, I really can't blame The Aga Khan for retiring her, homebreds of this caliber are really hard to come by via Bloodstock sales with Coolmore and Godolphin spending millions of dollars as it were monopoly money. |

New Approach ends season on Champion high Lee Mottershead 2,000 Guineas odds REPORT: CHAMPION STAKES, Saturday WE will not see him race again, but there can now be no doubt of his brilliance. At Epsom he had been impressive and at Leopardstown workmanlike, but at Newmarket on Saturday New Approach was simply magnificent. An afternoon billed as Champions' Day turned into the day of one true champion. Those who backed the Derby winner into 6-5 favouritism went into the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes with few worries. As the Irish star powered into the final furlong and retirement with an ever-increasing lead, they had considerably fewer. It was nothing less than an annihilation. After taking over from his pacemaker Upton Grey three furlongs out, New Approach powered further and further clear, eventually passing the post a dazzling six lengths in front of nearest pursuer Twice Overwith Linngari back in third. As if more proof was needed of the brilliance of the display, Newmarket's 1m2f course record is now his. For trainer Jim Bolger and rider Kevin Manning, New Approach's success put the seal on a sensational season and a wonderful afternoon. Just 35 minutes earlier they had teamed up to win the Darley Dewhurst Stakes with Intense Focus. Big-race doubles do not come much bigger. Confirming New Approach's retirement, Bolger said: "It was his last run and he has done everything right and it is all over now. He is the finest horse beyond a mile that I have trained." He added: "He was in super form coming up to this week and I couldn't have been happier with him. He had it all worked out himself and gave me the two fingerstoday. He even stood in the unsaddling enclosure when we put the saddle on and didn't move. "He was as near as to perfect as you could get going to the start and he was bombproof during the race." Manning said: "He was very impressive today, and of all his wins, today was his best. "The pace horse went agood seven-furlong pace and everything went according to plan. I get the easy job - full credit to Jim and the boys." New Approach's triumph also continued a great day for Sheikh Mohammed, whose wife Princess Haya ownsthe son of Galileo, as the Dubai ruler had earlier enjoyed his biggest ever Australian win when Godolphin's All The Good sprang a 40-1 shock in the Caulfield Cup. |
