We all know why he got elected. But that makes it ok to vote for a racist and a homophobe if it's good for their state? And that makes his statements defenseable?

ok..i'll edit this. If you are/were in small town South and all you know is tobacco, or whatever puts food on your table, I doubt you care much about his views on gays, blacks or much of anything. In fact, you probably heed his message because, well, you don't know differently. But this thread started out as an indictement of what he said and stood for in human terms, and I guess I was surprised that some tried to soften that message of hatred.

And the second statement is absolutely correct

Oh...I thought you were making fun of someone named Steve.

It figures a Steeler fan would take a celebrity photo.

Helms was not a hypocrite like many of these Democrats. Actions speak louder than words. Half of these deomocrats talk about race all day and yet they they would never put someone of color in a position of power. Helm's press secretary was black. In addition, he had another African-American on his staff. As I said, actions speak louder than words.

just read adams' bio--he wasn't a slave owner, and his home state of mass. was the first to ban slavery in the colonies.

jefferson avoided all conflict (face to face) and would say nothing, adams wasn't afraid to confront anyone about anything.

as far as jeffersons views--he felt that african americans were inferior mentally. matter of fact, unlike washington, he didn't free his slaves when he died-not even the mother of 5 of his children. his daughter did that tho.

as for helms-ask carol mosely braun how she thought helms felt about blacks.

But in general, I am always hearing people accuse conservatives of being racists and most of the time the accusations are completely unfounded. Just because a person is against affirmative action, etc., that doesn't make them a racist. In fact, you could argue the exact opposite.

If Helms was such a racist, why did he have a black press secretary?

a caller to larry king when helms was a guest thanked helms for 'keeping down the _______' to which helms replied 'thanks.'

Talk about putting sh*t on top of whip cream. You read this guys article, you would think Helms is sitting beside the right hand of God as we speak.
