Proposed..... what a shame.

From DRF...

Proposed injured and retired
- Steve Andersen

Proposed, the winner of two Grade 2 stakes this year, has been retired after suffering a knee injury, trainer John Shirreffs said. The injury was detected after Proposed's fifth-place finish in the Grade 3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap for fillies and mares on Aug. 18.

Owned by Marty and Pam Wygod, Proposed, 4, has won 7 of 15 starts and $567,600. She had her best season this year, winning 3 of 7 starts, including the El Encino Stakes at Santa Anita in January and two stakes at Hollywood Park - the B. Thoughtful Handicap for statebreds in April and the Grade 2 Milady Breeders' Cup Handicap in May.

Shirreffs said that Proposed underwent a nuclear scan this week that revealed a fracture in the knee. By Benchmark, Proposed will be bred next year, Shirreffs said.

Bellamy Road.....

From BH...

Bellamy Road to Stand at Hurricane Hall

Bellamy Road, record-setting winner of the 2005 Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I) at Aqueduct, will enter stud at Hurricane Hall near Lexington for a fee of $10,000. The 4-year-old son of Concerto won four of seven races and earned $811,400.

He will be the first stallion to start at Hurricane Hall, owned by Ben P. Walden Jr., Patrick Madden, Brad M. Kelley, and David Hanley.

"Few horses enter stud that were as athletically gifted as Bellamy Road," said Walden. "His New York track record was accomplished in a hand ride by over 17 lengths."

Campaigned by George Steinbrenner III's Kinsman Stable, Bellamy Road won the Wood Memorial by 171<$k-10>/2<$> lengths in stakes-record time of 1:47.16, which equaled Riva Ridge's track record of 1:47 flat set in 1973. Bellamy Road went into the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) the clear cut 5-2 favorite, but finished unplaced. He was sidelined for several weeks because of an injury to his right front leg that was discovered after the race.

Bellamy Road, who was trained by Nick Zito, finished a game second to Flower Alley in the Travers Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga in his first start back. He was taken out of training after the race and sent to Kinsman near Ocala, Fla, to rest. Plans were to run him this year, but he never started.

Bred in Florida by Dianne D. Cotter, Bellamy Road was bought by Kinsman for $87,000 at the 2004 Ocala Breeders' Sales Company April sale of 2-year-olds in training from Ocala Stud Farms, agent. He won his first start that year by 71<$k-10>/2<$> lengths at Delaware Park, then took the Miller Genuine Draft Cradle Stakes (gr. III) at River Downs.

Bellamy Road, who is out of the Deputed Testamony mare Hurry Home Hillary, is being syndicated.

Graded Winner Cryptograph Retired

Cryptograph, a Sovereign Award finalist last year, has been retired from racing. The 5-year-old son of Cryptoclearance won or placed in 13 of 20 races and earned $531,705 as a homebred for Josephine Abercrombie's Pin Oak Stable.

Cryptograph won last year's Woodbine Slots Cup (Can-III) and Durham Cup (Can-III) Handicaps the year he was a finalist in the older male division and captured the 2004 Round Table and Grand Prairie Turf Challenge Stakes in the U.S. He also placed in four U.S. stakes, three of which were graded. In what was his final start, he finished third to Funny Cide in the July 1 Dominion Day Stakes (Can-III).

Cryptograph's dam, Hopes and Fears (by Mt. Livermore), is a full sister to Canadian Horse of the Year Peaks and Valleys. Successful Pin Oak stallion Broken Vow appears in the female family.

Yes, you're right. That completely slipped my mind. Thank you for catching my mistake.

One of the greatest sights that I have ever seen was seeing Ouija Board win the BC F & M Turf. She truly was a hero. People were shouting for her like I have never seen. The winner's circle was a frenzy. When she came around in front of the stands after the race, people were just running to her and yelling. What an animal! Love that girl!

I'll will greatly miss her (when she is actually retired). I'm sorry that I retired her prematurely.:o

For her to race in the last three Breeder's Cup events in this race and finish in the money in all three is truly something. Also to beat males across the pond during the same time period - AMAZING! She is turf filly and mare champion HANDS DOWN and could be the BEST turf runner from either sex...this decade!

ok,
this is kind of what I am talking about in the Lord Derby thread.
she is great,
but the best turf runner of the decade?

Its not hard for me to come up with 10 Euro turf runners that are definitely better than her that raced this decade.

Falbrav
Alamshar
Montjeu
Sinndar
Giants Causeway
Kalanisi

Rakti

Grandera

and Im sure I am leaving off another 20 more that will come to me later.
I could probably name 10 horses just trained by AOB that were better than her that ran this decade.

great racemare, but no way does she rank with horses like Dalakhani and Falbrav.

he said she 'could be' the best this decade. certainly one of the very best mares to run, altho i would put makybe diva above her. but she has been a TOP horse for more years than most horses even run. incredibly tough, consistent, and carried more weight overseas than our top colts over here.

Makybe Diva has to travel the world and beat world class competition on several continents before she can be mentioned in the same class as Ouija Board. As with Silent Witness, u have to do more than just beat up on your provincial rivals to be considered a true world class horse. What Silent Witness and Makybe Diva do is really no different than what Lava Man does in California. Dominate the locals and whatever second rate shippers come to their home.

makybe divas three straight melbourne cup wins put her in rarified air. she was one in a million--and she won her third less than two weeks after winning the cox plate. other horses have won two melbournes, but three was considered impossible, let alone three in a row!

I'm not saying she isn't a really good horse or even a special one. But there is a difference between a really good one that beats the horses in their area over and over again and one that travels the world and beats the best. I think to compare Makybe Diva and Ouija Board is a total injustice to Ouija Board. Could Diva be better and beat Ouija Board? Possible. But Ouija is the proven world class competitor that Diva isn't.

Leave Me Alone

Leave Me Alone, the winner of the Grade 1 Test Stakes at Saratoga in 2005, has been retired after a series of disappointing results, trainer Eric Kruljac said on Sunday.

A 4-year-old filly, Leave Me Alone finished last of eight in the $100,000 Cat's Cradle Handicap last Friday, her 10th consecutive loss. Owned by Steve Mitchell, the California-bred Leave Me Alone ends her career with 5 wins in 18 starts and earnings of $653,330. Leave Me Alone was the 2-1 second choice in the betting for the Cat's Cradle. She raced near the front for the first half-mile and faded quickly.

"She doesn't want to do it anymore," Kruljac said. "It's time we recognize that she's had enough of racing."

By Bold Badgett, Leave Me Alone won two other stakes in 2005 - the Melair Stakes for statebred 3-year-old fillies at Hollywood Park and the Grade 3 Azalea Breeders' Cup Stakes at Calder. Following her win in the Test Stakes, she placed in three other Grade 1 races, finishing second in the La Brea and Gazelle Stakes in 2005 and third in the Santa Monica Handicap earlier this year.
Kruljac said Mitchell will make breeding arrangements for Leave Me Alone "by the beginning of the year."

More earth shattering news.

Her " stakes " win was an overnight stakes. She was actually an OK allowance horse who was done in by too many slow paced races.

Ouija Board misses farewell run

by Neil Morrice

OUIJA BOARD has been ruled out of the Hong Kong Vase and retired by her owner Lord Derby hours after a problem was detected on the mare's near-fore.

The five-year-old, a hot favourite for the Group 1 Vase on Sunday, was found to be sore when undergoing a routine examination by a HKJC vet and wasofficially scratched from the race at 4pm local time by her trainer Ed Dunlop.

Dunlop said: "It is a very very sad end to her career and an emotional day for everyone who have put in a huge team effort.

"This morning, much to our surprise, the marewasn't quite right. We x-rayed the leg and the damage was unremarkable, but she has jarred herself either on the dirt or the grass and we decided that enough was enough.

"I was with the owner Lord Derby, my own vet and the Hong Kong vets and we all agreed it was the right decision."

The Newmarket trainer gave Ouija Board some light exercise but added: "She had a canter but she was still slightly sore and there was a risk of further damaging her if we'd run.

"It is the same front splint that she injured two years ago in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at (Roayl Ascot at) York."

Dunlop suggested Britain's favourite racehorse will be shipped home rather than head to Kentucky, where she was set to be covered at Lane's End Farm.

He went on: "I'm not entirely sure where she'll be shipped but there's a good chance we shall bring her back to Britain where we can monitor the injury."

Ouija Board has accumulated a massive following with racing crowds the world over and was at the end of a remarkableseason which saw her race in places such as Dubai, the United States, Ireland and Japan. She has become the most successful Breeders' Cup horse in history after landing the Filly And Mare Turf at Churchill Downs, her second success in that race, while on what turned out to be her final start she finished an honourable third to Deep Impact in the Japan Cup.

Ironically she had looked as good as ever in her demeanour and work since arriving in Hong Kong.

Lord Derby was understandably upset that the mare had been denied the chance to go out in style.

"We are beside ourselves with worry," said Derby.

"She was only going out for a brief trot this morning and she came back and just didn't look quite right and so we thought we would have a closer look at things.

"We decided to let her have short canter on the racecourse this afternoon but we just weren't happy with her.

"It stems back to the problem she had in the early part of her four-year-old career and we looked at it and we all had only one thing in mind for a horse that we all love," he told At The Races.

"We have definitely pulled her and she is not going to run.

"She has had a glittering career and we will always look back on the positives."

Meanwhile, in other American news:

Friendly Island, who finished second to Kelly’s Landing in the Dubai Golden Shaheen (Gr.1) on March 31 and to champion Thor’s Echo in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint (Gr.1), has been retired after sustaining an ankle injury. Stud plans have not been announced for the six-year-old son of Crafty Friend who raced for the Anstu Stables of Anita and Stuart Subotnick. Trainer Todd Pletcher said that the injury would take too long to heal for Frienldy Island to be able to compete in this year’s Breeders’ Cup and so the decision was made to retire him, leaving his record at eight wins in 19 starts with earnings of US$1,369,714.

Certifiably Crazy retired

Certifiably Crazy, the two-time New York-bred male turf champion, has been retired due to a recurring problem with the stifle in his right foreleg, trainer Rick Schosberg said Wednesday.

A 7-year-old gelded son of Fit to Fight, Certifiably Crazy posted a record of 8 wins, 12 seconds, and 3 thirds from 30 career starts. He debuted in August 2003, winning a $12,500 maiden claiming event at Calder by 8 3/4 lengths.

Later that year, he finished second in the Grade 3 Calder Derby, one of three graded events in which Certifiably Crazy finished second. He was beaten a nose in the 2004 Red Smith at Aqueduct and a head in the 2005 Knickerbocker Handicap.

In 2006, Certifiably Crazy won three restricted stakes, including the West Point at Saratoga and the Mohawk at Belmont. Certifiably Crazy was entered for the Kingston here last month but scratched due to the stifle issue.

"We found instability in that stifle joint and concluded it looks like a torn ligament that would take quite a long time to heal,'' Schosberg said. "We decided he had done more than enough and it was time to call it a career.''

Schosberg, who trained Certifiably Crazy for Joseph Sweedler's Double S Stable, said Certifiably Crazy would be retired to the Wallkill facility of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation in upstate New York.

Australia’s Dubai star Benedetti suffers career ending injury
(no author listed)

Australia’s star of the 2007 Dubai International Racing Carnival, Benedetti, has been retired after suffering a serious injury in the spelling paddock.

Spelling after his brilliant third in the Group 1 Strabroke Handicap in early June, Benedetti fractured two splint bones.

His trainer, Tony Noonan, told nzracingnews.co.nz that the five-year-old’s racetrack career is definitely over and he is awaiting a decision by vets on the x-rays to see if the smart sprinter can be saved.

Benedetti was the first horse from Australia to race in Dubai outside of the Dubai World Cup mneeting and he impressed all winning his first two starts before his fifth to Kapil in the Listed Zabeel Mile.

LEADING SPRINTER SONSTER RETIRES TO DARLEY
06 August 2007

The hugely-impressive Grade Two winner Songster has been retired and will join the Darley stallion roster for the 2008 season. The black Godolphin four-year-old was among the USA's most exciting sprinters following two clear-cut and fast-time victories in Graded Stakes at three and an impressive win in his only start this year. A fee for Songster will be set at a later date.

Only once out of the exacta in eight career starts, Songster showed his brilliance early on in his sophomore season winning impressively at seven furlongs on his debut at Gulfstream. Later that year, he led at every call to win the six furlong G3 Hirsch Jacobs at Pimlico – geared down but by ten lengths, in 1:09.72. Next time out, back at seven furlongs, he came from off the pace to defeat Too Much Bling by two lengths in the G2 Woody Stephens Breeders' Cup at Belmont. His time: 1:21.45. He returned in the G3 Bold Ruler at Belmont, taking it under a hand ride by two-and-a-half lengths in 1:08.9. Mike Watchmaker, of the Daily Racing Form, listed Songster at the top of his weekly divisional ratings for sprinters, but injury has denied the colt a favorite's shot at the fall's championship sprints.

A son of Songandaprayer, Songster's pedigree combines two of the leading speed influences of the day in Unbridled's Song and French Deputy. A Florida bred from the family of G1 sire Slewpy, he sold for US$200,000 as a yearling. Charlie Boden, Darley's nominations manager said, 'It's disappointing Songster won't be able to challenge for championship honors, but he's a really exciting stallion prospect. He's great looking, a natural athlete, with top class form and commercial bloodlines. It will be a thrill to welcome him to Darley.'

Nayyir Bows Out
(no author listed)

Multiple-winning veteran Nayyir has been retired by trainer Gerard Butler.

Twice successful in the Lennox Stakes at Goodwood, the nine-year-old had shown little in three outings this season and the Irishman admitted it was a difficult decision to make.

"Unfortunately, we have retired Nayyir and it is the end of a great career," said Butler.

"It really choked me when I told the owners what I thought they should do. We've done it before something went wrong, he just doesn't seem to be enjoying it as much anymore.

"I would never have forgiven myself if something had gone wrong in a race or in training - at least he retires sound.

"I will speak to the owner but I would imagine he will go to a place like Moorcroft (Racehorse Welfare Centre). I don't think he would be suited to lounging around my yard."

The son of Indian Ridge won nine races in all, picking up £570,612 in win and place prize money.

Falmouth heroine retired

by Paul Eacott

RAJEEM, a shock winner of last season's Group 1 Falmouth Stakes, has been retired after Clive Brittain admitted defeat in his battle to get her back on the track after a number of niggling problems.

The daughter of Diktat has not been seen since she defeated Nannina by three-quarters of a length at Newmarket last July and that race, where she also had Group 1 winners Peeress and Soviet Song behind when sent off 50-1, proved to be her last.

"We decided that she had already won a Group 1 and she had done enough - she didn't need to prove anything else,” Brittain said on Friday. "She's gone to America and she's going to be covered out there.

"She hasn't raced this season. At the end of last year I was hoping we were going to have a good season with her and she got over her first injury but then she got another niggle.”
Saeed Manana's filly ran a total of ten times, amassing £140,152 in win and place prize-money.

After making an inauspicious start to her career when being beaten 15 lengths in a Windsor maiden over 6f, she finally lost her maiden tag at the fourth time of asking when stepped up to a mile at Nottingham in September 2005.

She followed that up with a half-length success in the Listed Montrose Stakes on the Rowley Mile the following month, but failed to make the frame in her first four starts as a three-year-old, including when finishing fifth in the Coronation Stakes, before fulfilling her trainer's faith with her all the way win on the July Course.

Connections retire Rebel after training injury
by Keith Hamer and Anita Chambers

DUAL 2,000 Guineas winner Cockney Rebel has been retired after suffering a training setback.

Plans to run the colt in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes later this month have been scrapped.

He had been working towards the Ascot showpiece after recovering from a fractured pelvis sustained in the St James's Palace Stakes at the Royal meeting.

But trainer Geoff Huffer told At The Races: "He was cantering this morning and a piece of paper flew across the canter at the end and his hind leg hit his near-fore on the tendon.

"He pulled up sound and went back to the yard.

"There was a slight bump there and I called in the vet to have a look. He scanned it and there is a slight injury there that would take three months or so to heal. I called his owner Phil Cunningham and I have just been over to see him. We have decided to retire him."

French derby hero to retire

by Desmond Stoneham
.
JOCKEY Olivier Peslier and trainer Jean-Marie Beguigne on Friday paid tribute to Prix du Jockey-Club winner Lawman, who has been retired to stand at stud in Ireland.

The son of Invincible Spirit gained a famous success in the French Derby under Frankie Dettori, completing a fantastic weekend for the rider who had won at Epsom on Authorized the previous afternoon.

Dettori was in the saddle at Chantilly only because regular rider Peslier was claimed by the Wertheimer brothers, but the Frenchman was back in the saddle when Lawman completed back-to-back Group 1 wins by thrashing a useful field over 1m in the Prix Jean Prat.

“He was a very good racehorse who improved with every outing,” said the rider. “He was a tough individual with anoutstanding turn of foot and you could employ all kinds of tactics on him.”

Lawman's final race was a disappointment, however, as he ran well below form behind Manduro in the Prix Jacques Le Marois, after which he was found to be suffering from a minor liver problem.
Now he has been purchased by Ballylinch Stud and will be syndicated to enter stud next year.

“Lawman was the best colt I've ever trained,” said Beguigne. “I am very sad to lose him at such an early stage in his career.”

Kieren Fallon also had a bit part in the Lawman story, as he rode the colt when he made a winning debut at Saint-Cloud. As he jumped Lawman, he told Beguigne: “You will win a French derby with this horse!”

Triple Group 1 winner Mandesha is retired

by Desmond Stoneham

STAR French filly Mandesha, who won three consecutive Group1s in the second half of last season, has been retired after finishing only seventh in Sunday's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Owned by the Princess Zahra Aga Khan, the daughter of Desert Style hasn't really shown the same spark this season after her exploits in 2006, when she enjoyed top-level success at trips ranging from 1m to 1m4f, winning the Prix d'Astarte, Prix Vermeille and the Prix de l'Opera.

This year she won the Group 2 Prix Corrida at Saint-Cloud in May before finishing runner-up in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, Nassau Stakes (to Peeping Fawn) and Prix Foy (to Manduro).

Hopes were high that the addition of cheekpieces in the Arc might work the oracle, but once again Mandesha failed to produce her finishing kick in the straight and was well beaten behind Dylan Thomas. It was the first time she had finished out of the first two in 11 starts since her debut at Longchamp in April 2006.

Revealing news of the filly's retirement, trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre said on Monday: “She is a younglady who is ready for stud. She was a great filly on the racecourse, and my only worry on Sunday was to see that she didn't come to any harm in the race.” Christophe Soumillon, who rode Mandesha in all but one of her races, added his tribute.“She was a superb performer last year and, when she won the d'Astarte over a mile, I was sure that was her best distance.

“I had my doubts when Alain de Royer-Dupre ran her over a mile and a half in the Vermeille, but then she was just as brilliant – and then she won the Opera over ten furlongs.”

Looking at the Arc, Soumillon added: “Regrettably, she hasn't shown the same form as last year, but she worked brilliantly with cheekpieces last Tuesday and we were hoping she would show the same sparkle in the Arc. Unfortunately, she did not.”
