A deserving horse like Rock Hard Ten got excluded from the Derby because he was DQ'd from 2nd place in the Santa Anita Derby.

A horse like a Big Brown, Hey Byrn, Face The Cat or even Elisyum Fields (with just 70K) all could find themselves excluded even with a big effort in the Florida Derby if they foul someone.

Where do the fillies (Country Star and potentially the Larry Jones' duo) rank on this list? Wouldn't Eight Bells be about $60K with County Star and Proud Spell both well over $500k?

Country Star would check in as 3rd with $565k... Don't have Eight Belles and Proud Spell handy, but Proud Spell has to be over $500,000 and Eight Belles maybe $90,000.

I thought there used to be a millionaire rule. Any horse that has over a $1 mil in earnings doesn't win the Ky Derby (not counting Street Sense)

Those silly rules are all meant to be broken. I'm sure no one with exactly $123,417 has ever won the Derby. Doesn't mean Blackberry Road can't win it cause of that. He can't win it because he's too slow.

Why was he "deserving"? They had a year to get him some earnings and didn't do it.

He was trained by the hapless Jason Ormen - and was a very late developing horse who didn't make his stakes debut until the Santa Anita Derby.

I say he was deserving because he would have certainly taken more money than any of the horses coming in from So. Cal that year.

41 Big Brown Dutrow, R. IEAH St. & Paul Pompa $0
42 Fierce Wind Zito, N. Minor Stables $0

I assume you would add Massive Drama to list of "Unlikley for Derby", and would guess at least 3 or 4 others currently in the top 20 won't run on May 3 due to obvious limitations on talent (Turf War, Anak Nakal, etc..). However, some owners just want to get there, regardless of how remote their chances of winning are.

I imagine they come up with those silly rules for a reason.
not counting Funny Cide (gelding), Barbaro (RAN curse) and Street Sense (BCJC winner) just to name a few.
The logic behind millionaire rule could be something about peaking early. Best horse in November/ February isn't the best in May.

it's not how I play the race. Just remembered the list

chromer,

Thx for spotting this and bringing it forward... And good for the Kasparoff Brothers and Co. for being prudent. The best stories in this crop are the inexpensive horses from 'everyday' connections doing well like this horse and Smooth Air. Was telling Haskin yesterday that Bob Black Jack reminded me of the King of the Roxy/Stormello type 3yo, and can be super productive if they treat him right.

Will Pletcher (assuming Monba does not get the earnings needed this weekend) bring back Atoned or TW in the Lexington and try to at least get one in the starting gate?

Will Pletcher (assuming Monba does not get the earnings needed this weekend) bring back Atoned or TW in the Lexington and try to at least get one in the starting gate?

From the Keeneland Barn Notes...

“Monba went well this morning, and he’s a possibility for the Blue Grass or the (Grade 2 Coolmore) Lexington (on April 19),” Pletcher said about the son of Monarchos who races for Starlight, Lucarelli and Saylor. Monba won his career debut at Keeneland last October, then won a one-mile allowance at Churchill Downs. “Probably have to make a decision on Wednesday,” Pletcher added.

Stopping by the Pletcher barn Sunday morning was Cot Campbell, head of Dogwood Stable, whose Atoned finished fourth in Saturday’s Illinois Derby (G2) at Hawthorne Race Course. Atoned turned in the best finish of four Pletcher horses that competed in major Kentucky Derby preps across the country.

“It was a funny race yesterday because they finished like they started,” Campbell said of the Illinois Derby. “They just kind of got in single file and went around there.

“I don’t think he liked the surface and there wasn’t a lot of speed in ahead of him. I don’t know whether we may run him in the (Coolmore) Lexington, which is possible, or wait and try the Preakness (G1) or skip that and wait for the Peter Pan (G2). Those would seem to be the options.”

One option not mentioned was the Kentucky Derby and Campbell seemed to raise the white flag on that possibility.

“I don’t think he would get in with $125,000 (in graded stakes earnings),” Campbell said. “We wouldn’t throw anything out today, but maybe after he has been back here two or three days, we will see how he is and figure out something. But I would think $125,000 wouldn’t cut it (for being in the top 20 in graded stakes earnings).”

12,

I think Atoned might sneak in after a defection or three and injury or two.. Monba is NOT certain for Bluegrass... Doubt McNair shoves Texas Wildcatter into anything. Not his style.

And since you brought up Stonerside, here's a picture of a REAL racehorse winning the Wood Memorial... ;)

Scott,

Either way, a Jones-trained filly is in a top spot on the list.. Would be very surprised by Eight Belles though. It's Proud Spell who is the appropriate Derby filly. Will have Larry Jones on ATR today or tomorrow to clarify, but I bet he won't commit to anything until Derby-Oaks Week.

Yeah, sounds like they won't commit until then:

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/other_sports/20080407_Eight_Belles_cruises_in_Ark___female_fill y_is_Derby_hopeful.html

Trained by Larry Jones and owned by Wilmington's Rick Porter, Eight Belles is nominated for both the May 3 Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Oaks, the big race of the year for 3-year-old fillies that is run the day before the Derby at Churchill Downs. She has $210,000 in graded-stakes earnings, enough to make the Derby field.

Porter said last night that the filly's handlers would keep the Derby open as a possibility. A final decision does not have to be made until Derby week.

"I'd like to find a way to run in the Derby," said Porter, the owner of last year's Derby runner-up, Hard Spun.

Tale of Ekati is looking better and better to me, although I fear that Saturday might have taken alot out of him, jock was really all over him, I thought he was a Derby horse last year, but then I couldn't understand what Tagg was doing with him. Tagg is probably a top 5 trainer in my opinion. I mean, he knew he had the earnings with this horse, and said, what is the point to have him ready, I'll get him ready in April. Derby will be what, his 4th start this year? Should be fresh, and should also get the trip. I just hope he doesn't get nuts and throw 57 or 58 works into this horse, would love to see some 6f 115 and 5f in 101, nice and relaxed

Derby will be what, his 4th start this year? Should be fresh, and should also get the trip. I just hope he doesn't get nuts and throw 57 or 58 works into this horse, would love to see some 6f 115 and 5f in 101, nice and relaxed

Actually it'll only be his 3rd start of the year, which until last year was voodoo. Personally, I don't like him at all for the Derby, seeing them come home in 14 seconds was all I had to know about the Wood this year.

His owner is cool as sh*t though, Steve you should try to get him on the show!

I think Salute the Sarge is going to the Lexington. If he doesn't fall completely on his face I expect they will probably run him in the Derby since the owner seems to be determined to have a Derby horse and Signature Move isn't going.

Story on ESPN says Eight Belles is headed for the Oaks.

As of today, who in the top 20 will not be running in the Derby?

Thanks in advance

Are the connections of Proud Spell and Eight Bells considering the Derby?

My guess is one of them winds up in the starting gate based on how eager Porter seems to be to have a Derby starter.

Story on ESPN says Eight Belles is headed for the Oaks.

she should, her last few races were vs small groups, her going against 20 in the derby would be a disaster in my opinion, and she'd be overbet. I think proud spell is the one, battle tested, she could fire big vs the boys.

Maybe Todd Pletcher

Maybe Todd Pletcher

Would be pretty funny but I'm still hoping Cowboy Cal wins the Blue Grass so people burn money on him come Derby Day.

I wish I had a wager on Pletcher not having a starter. I wonder what those odds would have been back in Jan.

Actually, the story on Bloodhorse quotes Rick Porter as saying they are keeping their options open...

23 Atoned Todd Pletcher $130,000
24 Z Fortune Steve Asmussen $129,000
25 Blackberry Road David Carroll $123,417
26 My Pal Charlie Al Stall Jr. $120,000

Those 4 respresent horses that 'technically' appear within the starting grid should the unlikelies NOT run... But of course all except Atoned will run this weekend and stand pretty good chances to improve their placement on the earnings list.

What about the others you have in green- Pyro, Court Vision, Cool Coal Man, and so on?

All likely for Derby baring injury, etc..

Really just asking why you coded those particular colts in green... was it meant to indicate something different from the others who are "all likely for Derby baring injury, etc.." (and are coded with red.)

Has any Delta Jackpot winner ever done much afterwards?
I think the race just knocks the winner out and the same can be said for alot of Kentucky Derby runners. Some just don't belong and others it is too much when they are still young.

Birdbirdistheword is the only one I can think of.

So we are looking at the very real possibility that Bob Black Jack could be #21 with Anak Nakal's decision determining whether or not he gets in the field. If that is the case doesn't Zito pretty much have to enter Anak Nakal to knock BBJ out?

Hey Steve, did you include Visionaire's $22.5K for fifth in the Blue Grass?
