Can You Believe This. Gulfstream Park and Equibase now say that the times posted for the Fountain of Youth Stakes yesterday were all wrong. They now tell us the race was run in 1:49.53, not 1:51.85, a difference of over 10 lengths.
Initial fractions are now said to be clocked at :23.56, :46.93 and 1:10.80. The mile is set at 1:37, which would mean the third quarter of the race was run in 26.20 seconds, if we are to believe these figures.
The initial chart for the race put the early fractions at :25.78, :49.27 and 1:13.19, with the mile registered at 1:38.31.
We are not very happy about this. This is not the first instance that times recorded at Gulfstream Park have been in error. It is a ridiculous situation, pure and simple.

I was just getting over hearing that the Earth isn't flat.....and now this?

Official time will be 1:50.0.
:24.0; :47.3; 1:11.2; 1:36.1; 1:50.0
Outrider's pony tripped the teletimer... Mike Welsch on ATR now...

Official time will be 1:50.0.
:24.0; :47.3; 1:11.2; 1:36.1; 1:50.0
Outrider's pony tripped the teletimer... Mike Welsch on ATR now...
This means the times I got with my iPhone were off by 1/5, and my theory that the clock started when the gates opened is wrong.
Maybe if GP ran more races at two turns, the crew would be more aware of where to stand.

No, it means they're full of it. I will trust the time I heard which was very close to the revised time.

Please elaborate. Not arguing, just not sure what you mean.

There is a long and storied history at Gulfstream of incorrectly timing the races and not accurately correcting matters. I take nothing they say on this issue at face value and considering the esteem I have for the person who relayed the real time of the race I am absolutely certain his time is " more " correct.

What do the adjusted times say about the performance of the top three horses? Just curious.

I know this was a big problem with grass races there but I didn't realize it was also a problem on dirt too.

I would agree with you overall.....it is a far bigger problem with grass races. And, it always has been.

Adjusted times (according to Bernie Hettel, racing operations manager):
1/4: 24.03 (difference of 1.75)
1/2: 47.62 (1.65)
3/4: 1:11.52 (1.67)
Mile: 1:36.32 (2.49)
Fin: 1:50.07 (1.78)
If the pony did trip the teletimer, which is believable, why would the differences in the times vary from 1/4 pole to 1/4 pole? They should all then be off by the same amount.

The time that was in the DRF chart is as close to accurate as we will get. Whatever time Bernie Hettel arrived at is of no interest to me whatsoever.

For those that haven't seen this, check out Steve Crist's latest Blog entry at drf.com. He talkes about the timing, but then includes an addendum from something Randy Moss, who actually does know how to time races, wrote.
It's very interesting and explains why Hettel's timing is inaccurate.
