I don't think there is such a thing as past your time unless you think you are. Cheer for the old guy, and when you think you are past it, look at what he did today at his age. That will change your mind...:)

I was thinking the same thing. I'm sure someone out there knows this obscure fact. If he didn't set the record today for that, I would have to think he is in the top 2 or 3. My guess would be he stands alone here. You don't see a heckuva lot of grades stakes horses even running 6 years let alone winning the same race 6 years apart.

Joe,

Congratulations again! You, Mary, TJ and Pat, and everyone associated with Attire, have the admiration and appreciation of racing fans..

Not only should we push for the return of the SAR BC, we should advocate a name change for it to the Evening Attire BCH! They're changing the name of the Californian to the Lava Man, so why can't Attire have one named after him?

Just scroll down to the Queen's County--it's the last race featured on the page.

Check out EA's profile in the stretch...he lowers his body mass and streamlines himself. Totally professional.

Good call by Durkin who seemed genuinely excited that the "old warhorse" did it by "running like an exuberant two year old" down the stretch.
I don't know why this horse ever started just walking out of the gate like that, but it sure gives him some added character.
The funny thing about a horse like Evening Attire is that not only are the horses he raced against early in his career (like Street Cry) long retired, but now their offspring (like Street Sense) are retiring too. Meanwhile he is still out there winning graded stakes races.

I saw it as going two turns for the first time, which obviously is his game, but the blinkers surely helped as well.
Another interesting note is he finished only 7 lengths back at 6F against the future champion sprinter Orientate in '01, which again is obviously not his preferred distance.

I just find it fantastic to see him happy and trying hard going on 10. We need more geldings like him!

Come on now Buffy. He is old and still very competitive. I like the horse and I wish him nothing but the best in the future.....but tears in your eyes? A hero for the horse racing community? I think that might be a bit over the top. He is old but is still physically able to compete, and still seems to enjoy racing. That makes it a cool story, but it would take a bit more than that to bring tears to my eyes.....like a swift kick to the groin.

Incredible looking at his past performances. The one that caught my eye was the 2002 Excelsior. He rocketed to the lead and led by 5 at the 2nd call. Of 63 career races....he never did it before and never did it after. Makes me wonder what was going on that day?? Especially coming in off 3 straight wins from mid pack. I'd love to hear the story behind that one as right after that he was back of the pack every single race.

Incredibly nice horse and quite the 9 year old season racing 12 times and never finishing worse than 4th in any race. The 9 month break sure served him well this year. He deserves any attention he gets.

As someone who thought she was going to lose her horse for the past month, it made me feel good to see this horse do well. Call me a sentimental female, I don't care. I can give ya that kick in the groin if ya want...

And what I meant by a hero was that he(EA) wanted the world to take notice of him. :p A horse who in this sport is still competing at his age and being competitive at that.

I meant to post this earlier, but I went and visited the great Black Tie Affair, sire of everybody's favorite 10yo gelding, a couple weekends ago. The guy looks pretty good in his stable at O'Sullivan Farm in Charles Town, and clearly rules the roost along with Prized, another former Breeders Cup winner. His coast is barely grey anymore, but the horse still has perfect conformation and looks like he could go out and win on the lead at 10f tomorrow.

Not on Evening Attire per se, but I thought fans of Evening Attire would like to know how his famous father is doing these days.

I know my family and I were thrilled by the way he ran yesterday. After the race I was amazed that he wasn't overly sweating or looking very tired. We had a few discussions on Friday and on Saturday about scratching him because of the heat but as Pat Kelly said if the heat was going to bother him he would not run. If Attire doesn't like the conditions he will not stretch out. That is why at ten years old he is still running. He is very smart and knows how to take care of himself.

I was hoping we would have a chance to run Evening Attire in Saratoga but I just read the new condition book and there is no race for him. The only long race at the end of the meet is a 9F, The Woodward. They do not plan on running any 10F races for older horsesfor the entire meet. I asked a number of times if they would write a long race and was always told yes. I guess NYRA thinks that Saratoga fans do not want to watch old horses running long in Saratoga.
Maybe next year or the following year when he is 11 or 12 they may write a 10F or longer race race.

He shipped to Monmouth this morning. When he got to his stall, they took off the traveling bandages; Pat noticed a little filling on his leg near a cut. The cut was from two days ago. He walked fine but we decided to be very cautious and scratch him. He got back to Belmont at about 1PM and the vet said he thought it may be a small infection from the cut. He was treated with topical medicine and will be checked again in the morning.

Reported in DRF this evening (9/22)

Evening Attire suffers a setback

Evening Attire was forced to scratch from Sunday's Point Given Stakes at Monmouth Park due to filling in a leg, trainer Pat Kelly said. The filling was detected after the horse arrived at Monmouth Park on Sunday morning.

Kelly said it would take a few days before he knew for sure how serious a problem the 10-year-old gelding may or may not have.

"We scratched to be cautious," Kelly said Monday morning at his Belmont Park barn. "We're checking it out. We won't know anything for another 48 or 72 hours. He's not running anytime soon. He's here, we're dealing with it."

Evening Attire was coming off an 8 1/4-length victory in the Greenwood Cup at Philadelphia Park on July 19 and seemed to have found new life going 1 1/2 miles. Overall, he has won 15 of 69 starts and earned $2,977,130 for owners Joseph and Mary Grant and T.J. Kelly.

Please tell me that its not true that this grand old warrior has been retired. If true how will his loss be filled. Certainly not by any of the greedy owners who are always thinking of $$$ when they have a top notch horse like this magnificient horse. Owners are always thinking about themselves and not of all of us fans. I am still suprised that Curlin is still running, although I am sure that if he shows up at Santa Anita he will be retired. It would be nice to see if he could become that all time leading money winner of all time, correct me if I am wrong but hasn't Big Brown's owner already said that the Breeders' Cup Classic will be his last start.
