View Full Version : Travel Arrangements (Chi-Town)
So i've pretty much decided what the hell, im gonna try and make the trip to chi-town to catch Sumwons race next week
I'm gonna be flying out of Dulles International Virginia into O'Hare and taking a cab from O'Hare to the track/hotel. The plan is, to arrive on the 11th (the day of) and ship out the next morning. Here's the dilemma, i don't know what is a good part of town and what is a bad part of town to get a hotel in. I'm not looking for anything fancy, just some where to lay my head for 1 night and not have to worry about getting shanked or mugged on my way to the ice machine. Any suggestions on cities or particular places to stay that are located between O'Hare and the track or not too far off?
What are everyone else's travel arrangements looking like?

don't worry about the bad parts of town. In between the airport and the track is all suburbs. for a cheap hotel I'd say the motel 6 in Rolling Meadows is just fine. the sheraton in arlington heights is more expensive but is in walking distance. DDthetide sent me a PM he is staying at the Doubletree in Arlington Heights and they offer a free shuttle to and from the airport and the track that seems the way to go as a cab will probably be about $40 each way.

wingate arlington heights is another possiblity. they have airport shuttle and only 4 miles from the track. i'm NOT sure yet if they shuttle to the track. Doubletree rates jumped greatly since i checked last week.

How much more could the sherton be on a Tuesday or Wednesday night?
My recommendation is just to stay there. You can stare at Arlington from your window all night if you want :)
And if you are flying into O'Hare, there is no bad parts, it is like 15 minutes from Arlington Heights, I live about 3 miles from O'Hare.
Now if you are flying into Midway, it could get a little trecherous(?)

$30 more, plus no complimentary shuttle to and from the airport (if you make your reservation today).:(

As of right now im gonna pull the triger on a wed-thurs flight to O'Hare with a package has me staying at the Mount Prospect Hotel. It doesn't seem too far from the track and it's a reasonable way from the airport (plus they say they have a free shuttle)
What im more concerned about is who is going with me to Medieval times on wed. night.. huh, who's with me?:p

I've always wanted to go to one of those places but our flight leaves at 9 pm that night. It's going to be a long and exciting day jumping on a plane early in the morning and flying back that night, but I'm really looking forward to seeing Sumwon.

when you say "shithole" you mean the rooms are bad, or it's not in a good part of town. I can deal with a sub-par room for 1 night, unless there are things growing in there

I booked the Wingate but am considering the motel 6 at about half the price. Am arriving 8:00 am and leaving Thursday 5:30 am. I am debating renting a car because my flight is well before the comp. shuttle on Thursday. Looking forward to meeting everyone. Let me know if anyone has this bazaar a schedule, I'll car or cab pool.

haha, no one need worry about getting mugged or shanked in Arlington Heights.
Near the intersection of Algonquin road and Arlington Heights road in arlington Heights there are numerous hotel choices. this is where I would stay because its close to the track and right off of I90, convenient from the airport. mapquest it you will find Wingate, Sheraton, Motel 6 Red Roof and many others.
go north on Arlington heights road two miles and you hit the downtown area where you will find some restauarants/bars.
think I'll take off that afternoon and head over to the track to see the queen and her entourage.:D
Hey, anyone else up for going out to dinner following Sumwon's race? Would like to spend time with new, crazy, degenerate gambler friends ....

One thought concerning hotels...The Sheaton is so damn convenient, you should see how many rooms you need and call them and make an offer. I guarantee that you can get a great deal on 6 or 7 rooms in the middle of the week. If you want to give me the number of rooms, I have some pull with Sheraton because I travel a lot and would be glad to make the call for you guys.

A cab is meter and half to Arlington ( considered suburbs)..It will cost you about $40 plus tip if you get one from the cab line. It's only about $28 plus tip if it's a pre arranged rided. Call info for 303 Cab Company

Thanks, sounds like the rental car is a better option if no one else is arriving around 9:30ish that wants to split a cab.
Especially considering that cab fare is only one way..you still have to get back. They really do the screw job to you on cabs, etc from O'Hare

Yeah, that is pretty bad. Any suggestions for killing a couple hours between 9:30 AM and noon?

Well, if you actually land at 9:30, it will be the first flight to land at O'Hare on time this year. Gates open at 11:15AM so you won't have too much time, especially if you get a car which involves shuttle etc. Get into AP as soon as it opens and just wander..lots of good food and places to check out

Cool, thanks, will be my first time at Arlington Park so exploring the area around there sounds like a plan.

A cab is meter and half to Arlington ( considered suburbs)..It will cost you about $40 plus tip if you get one from the cab line. It's only about $28 plus tip if it's a pre arranged rided. Call info for 303 Cab Company
Doesn't their Metro rail system go to Arlington Park. Whenever I travel to Chitown and go into O'Hare, I hop on that and go right to Wrigley, downtown, all over?

The trick is getting to Metra. There are 2 transits..Metra is the train which stops at AP, but the El (subway) is what you take downtown from the airport. There is no subway from O'Hare to suburbs and there is no Metra ( train) to O'Hare. So you would have to take a cab to a Metra station ( I know..how stupid is that) or take an El all the way into the city and then walk to the train station and come back out again. You think the cab compainies have clout here or what>?

Yes, Metra has a drop off right there. The Metra / Union Pacific District Northwest Line.
I used to sneak on when I was like 14 and get off without paying train fare because I needed the $2 for the late DD.
What you can do, and this is pretty complicated, is take the "L" from O'Hare to Jefferson Park, and then hop on the Metra going NW to get off at AP....
Alot easier to get a car and just drive it. Whoever is getting rental cars let me know and I'll get you easy directions. The key is Manheim(?) Road

from Ohare you can take a 303 taxi for $28.
another option is take the blue line to Irving park, then transfer to the metra line that runs right out to Arlington park. that will only cost like $5 but takes a little more time.
using this link you can find different ways to get where you need to go.

that's what I thought, and I have done it before at Jefferson Park.
its just when you run the trip query it says to take Irving Park. I'm not sure why but I'm sure its also possible even though it looks farther.

When I was younger and went to Wrigley I had to get on the Metra to Jefferson and then hope the Metra to the L to get to Addison and then the bus, now I can just drive to Rosemont and be done with it....
